No making money is not a step down. Take the job and you can always quit if you hate it.
As someone who went from a top tier agency to a local shop writing engineering brochures to a small indie back to a top tier shop, you get to decide what your career story is.
Maybe you went there because you wanted to wear more hats and they let you dabble in strategy and production. Maybe it was because you wanted to see first hand what kind of struggles face an up-and-coming business so you’re better equipped to navigate them when you’re in a leadership position. Maybe they have a lot of small, local clients, and working their gave you the opportunity to really help clients build their businesses from the ground up vs. the one off projects and extra layers that come with working with a big agency.
There’s gotta be something this agency can give you that no other agency can. Find it, take advantage of it, and make it a unique selling point for yourself.
You can always position it as freelance or whatever.
May I ask a question to seek some advice? Have you been picky in your job search or just hitting up everything you can? It’s surprising to hear it can take this long to get an offer with a strong resume, which I’m assuming has built you a big network. I may have to adjust my expectations a lot.
tbf I enjoyed a bit of a break during the first month, thanks to my severance. Since then, I’ve been actively applying. A few recruiters have reached out, but most opportunities were in locations I’m not looking to relocate to (I’m based in NYC) + the economy is bad right now, i know that usually I would've gotten a new job sooner. This is the first role that aligns with both location and compensation, even if the agency itself feels a bit random.
Do great work with integrity wherever you go. It’s only a step down if you approach it that way.
