Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

If you’re qualified, then trust your skill set and ability to do your job. I’m not sure what you mean by “diversity hire” but if you think you’re less than or hired because you’re a Black woman, that’s the energy you’re giving to your coworkers. Every workforce isn’t going to be racially diverse, unfortunately. We’re only 6-7% of the US population, so we won’t be in the majority of corporate white-collar spaces. Being hired as a Black woman doesn’t mean you were hired because you’re a Black woman. You were hired to do your job. Own your credentials, ability and limitless potential!
1. Expose the company for not being diverse enough.
2. Keep in mind this job market is tight and you might be out of work for a while.
3. If it makes you uncomfortable being employed at a company which does fit you culturally, you should resign.

White people have benefited from their race for centuries. If we get the nod these days because of our race, take it and benefit from it.

Yup. Might as well get paid.
I wouldn’t care why I was hired - doesn’t matter. I’m here now. They’d get this #blackexcellence and that’s that on that.
…you were hired rejoice?? I’m the youngest and only black woman on my team. Be proud !! Do you feel ashamed??
Well the company making the change is great shows they’re aware of their culture. I guess I understand why it would be weird to be the “token” in a way but on the bright side you could feel honored. I grew up in white spaces so I understand the shock at first. You could also use this as an opportunity to redirect your sourness to making sure the other new hires and future hires feel welcomed ☺️!! Create a leadership opportunity for yourself ..It’s weird because it’s 2023 and they just now realized …
Why does that matter. You’re just as good as everyone else and you got your foot in the door. So be a boss. Besides you don’t know if it was gender or race based or I mean who knows. But you got BGM. For me I don’t care how I got hired but for where I want to go I just think I’m here so ha!
There was only one black worker in my department until October 22 when another black worker was hired, an Asain was hired in November 22, and then I was brought on this year.
Diversity doesn’t mean sub par. It doesn’t matter how you got your foot in the door. It does matter how you kick the same door down!
America is 75% white. I don't know the numbers for your particular career, but Black women are less than 2% of lawyers in this country. Anytime we show up in places that we haven't historically been, folks are going to treat you funny. Get the bag. Damn them & their microagressive BS. Be excellent & make them choke.
What does "diversity hire" mean to you?
For me it's just that I was one of the first people that stood out when they started filtering based on race, not that I was a lower choice or undesirable in any way
I feel like diversity hire or not, it’s up to you to prove your worth and grow. Don’t fixate on why you got the opportunity or how you got it. Worry about what you’re going to do with it. How is a diversity hire different from a partner referring a family member or friend. How is a diversity hire really different than a networking for an opp, or hiring someone based on name (famous or legacy). Don’t sweat that part. Just bust your a$$ and make your path forward.
I feel you because I was a diversity hire too (and felt some type of way about it for a moment) BUT I also know I beat out internal candidates who were going for the same role based on my skill set. You probably did, too, even if you’re not aware of it.
So, at the end of the day, we still in that thang based on qualifications and if being Black added a lil extra weight to the application, so be it. ❤️
All my career, I have been either the only one or one of a few POC. I kind of like it because it gives me an excuse not to engage in any office politics. I like to do my work with no one in my business.
And even though I hate the word diversity hire, I still think we need affirmative action. I’d rather be a diversity hire and flex my skill set muscles than be a no hire.
Show them why you were hired. Diversity or not. Do the damn thing! 🫰🏾
Who cares
Who cares. They’ve been doing white male hires for centuries
That doesn't have to be a bad thing. In my experience with hiring for diversity, we dont just look at the race of an individual and pick them solely on that. 1. You still have to be one of the most qualified and 2. We look at what your experiences can bring to the company and teach future employees if you continue with the company. We look at you as the whole person that you presented at your interview. Trust me, if we just need POC to diversify and did not care if qualified, we wouldn't even waste our time interviewing. Just send out offer letters. Also, diversity initiatives mean the company has finally come to terms with this as an issue that needs to be addressed. They are listening.
Thank you, I was just about to say this. To even get an interview means you're qualified to do the job. And if you're black and female you're very qualified, most overqualified when you do get it. Hiring you just for your race or gender doesn't make a Hiring Manager look good. If it did, they'd take the easy route and never have a need for these programs. That's why people have nasty things to say, they're threatened. Diversity programs are set up to encourage folks doing the hiring to think more dynamically about what experience is relevant and beyond folks that look like them or have a similar background. But more often than not the programs have a "pipeline problem" where they just can't fine qualified applicants. If you're a diversity hire (which we don't really know), then good, they are sticking to their commitments and you can hold accountability/see the progress. Also know, it speaks volumes about you. Be confident, it's like a badge that says you're the sh*t.
Sounds like you were a great catch for them, win-win.
