The catch is that you have to be ready and ok leaving if they don’t give you the raise.
Nope. It's like a relationship. If you even entertained leaving - go.
Don't take it for the money. Take it because you truly want to change. 20k isn't that much money when you break it up paycheck to paycheck.
Idk if that’s true CW1. In this industry, regardless of where you are, you won’t get promoted or get a raise unless providing a counter offer. It’s just how it seems to be. Doesn’t mean you don’t like where you are or that you aren’t valued
Only use an offer to try and force a better deal if you are 100% willing to walk if your current employer doesn’t match. Make sure you communicate the new opportunity in the right way. And don’t make it about the money.
Don't undervalue the power of honesty. State your reasons, like you're telling us. I've done this before and I didn't come across like I was begging for more money, it was more like I needed guidance. I ended up staying. Of course, your current company may come back with a 10k bump or a title bump instead of a 20k bump. And then you have another decision to make.
If you're leaning towards going with the other gig, you might as well see if current gig will counter bc you'd have nothing to lose.
Caveat is that I feel *slightly* undervalued where I am now but know I'd be just a cog in the machine at the agency that offered me the big pay bump. Current agency has a great culture. So do I bring up the offer and risk pissing off my bosses? Or keep quiet and wonder if I could've used the offer to leverage a raise? Or just take the money and run?
If you got your senior title at that agency, you might have a better chance getting a raise, they clearly value you. If you came in as a senior and not up for a promotion, I don't think they'll care much if you stay or if you go, so they won't give it to you.
It depends how undervalued you feel.
Why not?
This is generally frowned upon on this app.
Take it if you need the money then come back to your current company down the track - at a higher level. No decent boss will deny you being able to pay the rent or mortgage more easily and as well as growing professionally - to say those things don't matter would be disingenuous.
It’s not a good move. When it comes time for promotions, raises, or most importantly layoffs in the future, you’re now the disloyal one who had their foot out the door and will be the first on the chopping block.
