I was offered a new job, but they want me to start next Tuesday. Is it wrong for me to give my current job less than a week's notice? I don't want to lose this new job.

Do it..on the flip side companies will let you go in a heart beat. Work at will is a thing and you dont have to give a 2 week notice. It would be nice but in these circumstances you have to do whats best for you. ,

like

Agreed. Companies don’t give you two weeks notice if they go bankrupt or if they decide to fire you for some reason. And they can always find a reason if they want to.

like

As a former area manager, I say go for it. There is no loyalty in this job market.

like

A two week notice is a depends on the job and how they treat you option. They will fire you and replace you without a two week notice, no matter the company, so I say just go for it. I’ve done it, especially with companies that treated me poorly

It’s terrible how the retail world is. I don’t work in retail anymore, i refuse to. Im sorry to hear about your sister. Ill keep you guys in my prayers

Do what’s best for you, it’s a dog eat dog world nowadays and giving up on opportunities that you would like to take will come back to eat at you later in life. Your current employer may be a stellar place to work for and I get feeling wrong for not giving the 2 week notice but you have to take what you can get because life really is too short to let go of opportunities. Hope that helped and good luck to you.

Being respectful to your current employer and giving two weeks notice is the right thing to do. Never burn a bridge to those who can give you a good reference someday. Also, if the new employer doesn't see your character value by doing the right thing, maybe they aren't the company you should be going to.

Agree .

You know, I had the same problem. I was with a company for about a year and they gave my " promise position" to someone else. About 2 weeks later I found a better job, more hours/ pay and I question myself about the same thing.. I only gave them 2 days notice and I left cuz I was afraid I was going to miss out on the new job. At the end of the day you gotta look out for YOU, no one else will

Go for the New job! Most of the time after an employee puts two weeks notice in your hours will be cut drastically if your even put on schedule foe last two weeks . Proven facts are after person puts 2wks. In that job performance drops, and the chances of theft go up drastically because they are not invested in company after notice is given. As a manager 99% of the time in restaurant business as a manager after somebody gives notice I just remove them from schedual and start training replacement. This industry is definitely dog eat dog and you should worry about you and yourself because most people in this industry are two faced back stabbers doing whatever they need to do to benefit themselves. There are some exceptions and some people have a good heart and soul. Seems like from my experience the good people without alteier motievs

"Motives"

that's a question I have battled with ever since I became a manager. one the one side you don't get a t.w.n. when they fire you but one the other side if your manager was a good person a notice gives them some time (not a lot) to plan coverage for your shifts and it also lets us know you respected us or liked us. also it leaves you as rehire-able in good term. I know "Im never going back to that job" but Ive been in managment for over 10 years in customer service retail. the amount of people who quit for whatever reason that have contacted me asking if they were rehire-able is enough for me to think it has merit to leave on good terms. hell even if it's just a weeks notice it's better than nothing. also I have had people ask me to push a start date back a week so they could give there old job a proper notice and that told me I was hiring someone worth investing in.

What job shows loyalty to employees. You can be the best, but they just use you for their benefits

like

Notice is nice IF you can do it.
If the new job needs you, work at the new job. The old job showed YOU no loyalty. That's why youre quitting.

I'd do it. You're giving notice, just one week. That's enough time to re-arrange the schedule and start advertising for your position. And if it's part-time, I'm sure some co-workers will be glad for the temporary boost in hours til they fill your spot. Win-win there. Plus, one week means they can't try to badger and manipulate you into staying (I fell for that once and it took me 6 months to get out again, and i only gave a week's notice that time). The job market is broken and it's hard to get a good opportunity so quickly. Grab onto the new one and don't let go.

I almost missed out on my current job bc of the 2 week notice. Luckily, my current job, waited 2 weeks for me to start.

Explain the situation

It’s not ideal but it’s not wrong. If the new job is something you’re really passionate about getting into I would 100% make the jump.

Always give 2 week notice if you can… but if you can’t… don’t sweat those consequences, employers understand life happens.

I didn’t give my two weeks notice in my last job and that was mainly because they sucked at scheduling and wouldn’t tell you the next week until like the day before. it worked out though because I really like this job and I have opportunities to grow already when it’s been less than a year

The only reason I would work out a 2 week notice would be to remain in good standing with my current employer. You never know when you may need to fall back on them. If you don’t give that common courtesy, you may not get any from them should this new job not pan out. But if you have no intentions of ever going back under any circumstance, who cares! Ultimately, bettering yourself is the goal. Just keep in mind that every job behind a keyboard and a mouse will be done by AGI come 2030.

Did Spirit Airlines give the WORLD any notice before they shutdown operations? Nope.

These companies will get rid of you or abandon you in the blink of an eye. I CAN understand if it’s a small niche business, but if you work for a larger employer and you know your position can be filled quickly, leave for better.

You never know, you could give them notice and they’ll deactivate your access immediately and let you go THE SAME DAY, like A LOT of companies do.
