I think a lot of this is often network based. Personal connections to make that a bit more organic makes it easier. I havent done it myself though so outside of that, dont have more detail
It’s just standard poaching practice. Someone (a recruiter or connections) reaches out and expresses interest in wanting you to join their company. I had a recruiter from a competitor reach out to me on LinkedIn. It’s pretty straightforward process like a regular interview once you agree to to it but you have more of the upper hand in negotiation if they want you. I’ve also been told in causal settings by competitors “reach out if you want a change” type of conversations.
Recruiters or hiring managers are pretty much on top of identifying top talent at other companies, sometimes using LinkedIn, referrals, or industry events. They might reach out directly or through mutual contacts. The first contact is usually exploratory... gauging interest, discussing the new role, and seeing if there’s a skills and culture fit. If the candidate is interested, they’ll go through a tailored interview process, often streamlined for senior or highly specialized hires.
