Who's got the most fishbowl points?
Hi fishes! I volunteer with The Art of Good, a creative collective helping small businesses affected by the pandemic. They are seeking a little help from a media professional. Need an SEM POV for a small business looking to change their name and relaunch their brand. This is non-paid. More about giving back while in-between gigs. :) If you can help out or want to learn more, please reach out to me via LinkedIN. Thank you!! www.linkedin.com/in/karenkohn/

Let go and laid off are both common in our industry- you are not alone! If you were laid off due to downsizing, losing an account etc. just say that. It's probably in the trades anyway so it's known. If you were fired or let go, figure out your one liner- be direct but short about it. No need to be self conscious about it in this industry
Then that's your story without the "fired" lingo or you being unaware part. Say it was great while it lasted but with recent management changes you weren't fitting in anymore and felt it was time for something new where you feel you can grow again. Stop talking after that. One concise complete thought.
It only feels weird the first time. The first time it happened to me, I got a call from an industry vet saying “Congratulations!!” because it was a rite of passage. So Congratulations! Anyone who gets to be a vet in this business without at least a couple of involuntary unemployment gigs simply isn’t trying hard enough. Job security is for hacks.
“My lawyer told me I can’t discuss an ongoing investigation."
“I got fired because I’m 🔥"
Just don't bring it up until it's directly asked.
Perfect!👆🏽
👆agree completely.
OP, were you fired or laid off? It's very different indeed. If fired, don't be "direct" about it. Say the position wasn't the right fit for you if you hadn't been there long. Or that you felt like you had stopped growing, if you had been there a while. If you give more context, I can provide more solid advice. Btw, if you were fired for a legitimate reason, do try to learn from it and course-correct or they will fire you again no matter where you go. If you were laid off, know it's not you and you will recover!
To those asking, I was fired, but very amicably. I’d been at the place for a couple years and a lot of the leadership I knew well had moved on. Current leadership just didn’t feel like we were a great fit anymore. Nothing “happened,” though. It was just a growing apart that I wasn’t fully aware of until the axe dropped.
Layoffs / lost clients is a good option
I wouldn’t address it unless I had to. We’re the layoffs written up in the trades? I would usually reference that in some way so it seemed like more of an agency thing than a me thing.
Dude. Just say you’re looking or you decided to freelance- don’t say you were let go.
