When you are "let go" apply for your state's unemployment insurance. Follow the guidelines of the program. Many times, a person who is terminated for reasons not related to misconduct or violations of employer rules can be approved for unemployment benefits.
Good luck and be persistent.
I was laid off in July three days before my 58th birthday! I was there almost 7 years! I was told “budget cuts”. I was working remotely and this job was my life, I loved what I did wholeheartedly. I too thought this was my last job, boy was I wrong!! I was able to collect unemployment thankfully, but finding a job seemed impossible especially at my age but after 200+ applications and only two interviews I landed a great position. There is something better out there waiting for you. Don’t give up it’s coming soon. 😊
I'm 59, believe me, I get it. I've had several interviews that I thought went well but never got a call back. I'm sure it's my age.
I had 2 more this week, I'm hoping to hear something, but if not I guess I keep trying.
I just feel so defeated.
Where do you live? I'm surprised you were let go as a certified Medical Assistant. I work in healthcare and there are many Medical Assistant positions available in our company in Virginia. I'm very sorry to hear this happened.
You can sign up for unemployment. That's what I leaned to first thing after I got home from being "let go". I made the call to put myself on the call back list. Took 2 days for them to get back to me. I wasn't even told why I was let go. The administrator sent my manager back to tell me I was let go. I didn't say a word. I just left. Took me 4 hours to walk home but I felt my worth with every step. I had my interview today. They will be contacting the administrator that let me go to see if I will be able to collect. I have put out so many applications out there. One place called me and asked if I wanted to work in the meat department, Sorry, no, that is not what I signed up for. I asked her to keep my application live and she said she would. I looked online for it and it's not there so she lied to me. That's HR for ya.
Good luck to you. I really do wish you all of the best.
HR is another department that’s full of psychos. They get a little full of themselves knowing everyone’s issues. After 35 yrs as a nurse, I desperately want out. It’s very sad. I used to love nursing. I guess I still do, but corporations have ruined it across the board.
I had a very similar thing happen the PA I worked for put in his notice but wasn't leaving for 4 months, but decided he was going to slow down, so he took fridays off, we were already off in the afternoon. So I asked if I could also,my manager said nope someone else wants it,but we are not going to have a position for you so I have an office you can go to and work 4 days you'd be off on Mondays, I said I wanted to stay and leave when he did if they didn't replace him, which I heard they were going to replace him and I knew the guy. The manager says oh we may replace him but it probably won't be for awhile due to credentialing🙄ok well the PA isn't leaving for 4 months, she says yeah he's going to not have a nurse since he's slowing down so I got you already transfered let's go check out the other office, so she just transfered me. Ummm ok, we go to the other office and it's very small the position she told me about wasn't even available and now I'm stuck working with this 22 yr old mouth, whom thinks she's my boss, she literally screamed at me everyday, I never got lunch but got wrote up cause I wasn't clocking out for lunch, long story short it was a plan to get rid of me, she quickly had me in a step 2 write up so I couldn't transfer, so I injured myself the following weekend my provider took me off work for 2 weeks I was still not 100% so he said let's do therapy and take you off another 2, manager was pissed because she thought I'd be back and let the other 2 nurses off so she needed me back to run 3 providers, then she proceeds to text me about me, had my 22 coworker harassing me everyday telling me all my new duties when I get back, my husband said just quit, well my provider after 6 weeks released me but with restrictions and I was told corporate wouldn't accommodate my restrictions and to find a new job, this is after 25 yrs of service running 2-3 providers everyday working every weekend and as soon as I couldn't make her look good anymore she had no time for me, I quit because the thought of being fired was more than I could handle, I was denied unemployment and can not find a job anywhere yet everyone is short handed,I do believe I was black balled and she sent the word out to not hire me. It still hurts me so bad, my trust and faith in humanity was lost, I went to HR and I went to her manager and got nothing 25 yrs, never written up never a bad comment patients loved me and that's the thanks I got, sorry that was so lengthy🙄. Honestly I cry every time I talk about it.
Me too, and the fact it's been over a yr since I've worked and I can't get an interview if I tried, I'm thinking about taking a cleaning job just to relieve some stress off my husband, it's so sad, and it all started over some jealous girl spreading rumors and management believed her and she was a new hire. I just don't get it.
I'm a strong believer that doors close for a reason and others will open. There IS something out there for you! Stay POSITIVE, take extra good care of yourself and hold fast to the knowledge that you ARE a catch for whomever you work for. Utilize multiple sites for your job hunt...... indeed, local, Google searches, etc. File for unemployment FIRST AND FOREMOST to get a little cash flow going.....it can take 6 weeks to get a check! Look at part time jobs just in case a full time position doesn't materialize as quickly. Keep an open mind and do things to KEEP POSITIVE because that is what you will eminate in interviews! YOU GOT THIS!!
I was in the same situation I was told in May the same thing in May. I was going to be out of a job in July due to downsizing. I am able to collect it so I would look into it with your state and county.
Considering this. Grateful for the population health that builds relationships and works with people.
If you're close to BSWH, they're a great company to work for. Check their website to see if there's anything in your area.
It wouldn't hurt to apply for UIB. In the meantime, get with the Department of Labor Workforce Connection. They can help you go over your resume and fine tune it, conduct mock interviews and give feedback, plus their database includes all employment companies (Indeed, Glassdoor, Monster, etc.) which eliminates multiple applications for the same position. Now is the time to embrace the changes that you cannot control. Let go of the anger-this is part of life. Be positive in your thoughts and actions. As you said...'It was them'
You are eligible for up to 26 weeks of unemployment in California and the maximum payment is $450/week and it's taxable.
I did some digging around. It's the same in Indiana but 390 a week. Thank you!
Yes, you can collect unemployment benefits. “Let go due to downsizing” means lay off from your job with no fault of your own. Make sure you apply for unemployment benefits exactly on date 11/01. Try an employment agency that can help place you in a job. I recommend Randstad.
You can collect unemployment but it is not forever. If you haven't filed go on line righ now and do it. I always do it the same day im let go. I have been let go becaus of downsizing or off-shoringway too many times and have always collected.
I was let go as well end of May this year when my boss ( business owner and doctor) decided to close the business, unexpectedly. I was able to collect unemployment for two months. Then got a job offer and did that job for about a month and a half but it wasn’t right for me. Now I’m working part time ( not ideal being part time and not sure about benefits) but the business is getting changes in the new year so will see if it becomes full time with benefits ( if it doesn’t then I’d have search again for another position). It’s been quite the year 😥
Yes you can get unemployment, make sure they give a piece of documentation.

I am still not over losing my job because of downsizing in May 2024. I thought it was my long-term home and I could gain some years of experience..
I live in WI and can collect unemployment, it's a state-by-state thing.
Applying is defeating. So many many many applications, some scams and still jobless. Here's to a positive fall and we both find something that's perfect for us!
Yes if they laid you off you can get unemployment!
Yes I also second other people’s answers, being jobless can be so upsetting especially when you’ve done nothing wrong.
Yes apply for unemployment, every dollar helps.
A couple things I’d recommend before your very last day.
Ask your supervisor for a supportive letter you can attach to your applications when you send them out.
Second thing, make sure you get something in writing that says the reason you were let go. Unemployment is going to want to see that letter, it will make the part of getting unemployment and a check in your hands the faster way possible.
Lastly….try to network as much as you can, ask your coworkers if they know of anyone or anyplace that’s hiring…..that will help too.
I went through a period of time where o was jobless and had bill collectors calling all the time and I was losing sleep it was making me sick.
But one thing i eventually realized is that bill collectors are just that bill collectors. They may call and harass you on the phone, but it’s not like they are going to eat you.
All you can do is all you can do, and if you’re at least doing that….then that’s moving forward.
You should check out usajobs.gov. I’ve seen alot of work from home jobs that might be an option for you.
Best of luck!
I wish you the best.
You can collect unemployment. Good luck to you
Sorry this has happened to you..at least you were given a heads up. I didn't have that experience after being employed by the company over 15 years. I'd say for sure apply for unemployment and try to recoup. This can affect you mentally, so take some time to mend You. Best of luck to you in finding a better place.
I get it and I’ll tell you like a very close family member that’s going to the same thing. Yes apply for unemployment in the state that you are in. Do it sooner than later in addition be sure you state that you were not fired. It was a corporate restructuring and you were one that was let go. If your company posted other employees that will let go with your ages listed and positions. Try to get a copy of that. Many companies will do that so they can’t be charged with age discrimination.
There’s a very basic rule that’s so easy but it’s the most difficult to see . Try not to get into the why me.. that basic rule is to “change how you think” Once you change how you think things will happen over time. I know it’s not a consolation for what you’re going through.. i’m a firm believer in business cards. Talk to everyone you come within 3 feet and hand them a card that is your walking billboard. Make sure you have resumes in your car.
I understand there are many fake job and job ads out there as well . Network network network, go to professional meet ups Chamber of Commerce meetings introduce yourself on your business card beside your name contact information come up with a grabber line.. you only need one response that’s positive and may may cost you under your resumes. You only need one.!! You have a much better position of employment from a position of employment so don’t worry about making a few dollars less. For every No you get it will lead you one step closer to a yes.. and never take a no from someone who can’t say yes! Stay positive and proactive.
I apologize. I’m doing voice to text. I can’t edit this, but I think you get the idea.
I just had this happen in April 2024. A whole department was being downsized and let go. File unemployment. We all were able to file. It is nothing you did wrong.. This atleast will help you till you find something. Sorry that this happened. God Bless!
