Having led recruiting at a T15 MBA program for an MBB:
-We never looked at a formal on-paper threshold of work experience. To me, 2.7y and 3y read as the same
-We always looked at the substance and progression of work experience as one indicator of what your accomplishments and potential are -- and I hate to say it, but compared with the other hundreds of resumes in the same pile from the school
If you progressed during those two years and eight months, if you had big responsibilities, if you supervised someone, if you managed external stakeholders, those are all notable transferable skills. If someone was doing that within three years, that's a great sign. If you're simply inexperienced, it's not an automatic ding, but something else has to jump out.
Also, don't sleep on smaller consulting firms either as career paths in their own right or as summer internship opportunities that you can then parlay into re-recruiting during second year. The latter is not something to bank on, because second-year recruiting is widely variable year by year. That said, it's easy to get caught up in feeling like the summer internship is the only opportunity to find your post-MBA job, which isn't true.
Take advantage of summer intern programs and any Consulting clubs the school may have. You'll build skills and get a taste of consulting.
