B-school. It’s how 95% of those moves happen. Good luck
That’s not what he’s saying at all. First year IB analysts are hired into a very structured training program where the basics are drilled into your head before touching anything client related. Lateral hires don’t go through that process and so are expected to be able to “hit the ground running.” Also, most open lateral roles are for analysts with 1-2 years of experience for which there are obviously higher expected levels of familiarity and experience.
investment bank institute. earn your CFA
IBA2 you are saying that students coming out of university have the finance and accounting skills required for IB but people in the BO don’t?
Advice: Make modeling and accounting your full time hobby so that you can confidently speak about it and not be afraid of any tests or technical questions. Then go out and network hardcore to get interviews for junior roles. You may have better luck with smaller mid market banks rather than B.B. If this doesn’t work for a prolonged period of time, then pursue the business school route. As an alternative, you may find breaking into various investing or client roles in asset management easier.
Honestly I don’t see any way you could make the move without going to b school. BO employees don’t have the finance and accounting skills required for IB. They may have the potential to develop them though, in business school.
Maybe go credit analyst then IB. My coworker did it he's like a 27 year old analyst
GS1 thank you for providing an answer that was not solely to throw $150k at b-school. I am actually also at GS, do you have any advice for navigating the internal mobility route (would be more ideal than looking externally)?
I asked this to find alternatives to b-school. I know its possible internally with a strong network and the right timing, but I know even with that its no sure thing. There has to be a way to navigate externally as well
As someone who went from the BO of a BB to IB at another, I can confidently say that you’re intent on doing this you should focus on the GMAT and your b-school app. The application process for these jobs is tough enough, it’s pretty easy to weed out people who only have an undergrad degree and BO experience.
