I had no choice and I miss certain aspects, but generally it’s OK. The hardest part (aside from the uncertainty) is when someone rewrites my copy or my creative doesn’t get picked, and I know better but there’s nothing I can do. Sometimes I just go “oh, you’re going to present that? Cool. I guess that means this gig just got extended for another round.”

Any tips for moving up in a medium/large-sized legal department, aside from switching companies? M/SM and above, why do you label a meeting as “touch point” or ask if you can have a “quick chat” when it’s something serious? Millennials like us always assume we’re about to get fired - I actually have been laid off in a meeting with that title. But at my new job, my boss asked for a “quick chat” to literally ask me to change the title of a meeting and then chat about christmas. Now that I’m in management, I want to understand it better.

What’s the best way to negotiate more money during a contract to FTE conversion? My manager and I had the conversion convo today and he said he’d like to convert me immediately and took the action item to do so. In terms of comp he said they should already have what I’m expecting but I don’t think I communicated any FTE number to my contracting company. In this job market with all the layoffs, should I count my blessings and take what I can get or is there wiggle room.

1099 or w-2 ? I have been given the option though the company prefers w-2. It’s a day rate booking couple of months or more (no end date). I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

How much higher should my 1099 hourly rate be compared to hourly breakdown of annual salary? Like add 30% for taxes, then roughly how much more considering no benefits etc. - like 10-15%?
