I use to give my opinion and “pushback” when appropriate. Not encouraged in my current team so I got tired of the constant struggle and lack of appreciation and biased perception of performance. Now I just keep my head down.
Psychological safety needs to be part of the work culture in order to promote healthy debate.
Having the ability to set your ego aside is a leadership quality often overlooked.
It's good to create an atmosphere where people feel the freedom to chime in if they have an opinion that seems to go against the current. But it has to be managed so you don't get people being contrarian just for the sake of it. That's easier said than done, but over time one gets better at assessing what ideas have merit and what's grandstanding.
Some courses of action are so obvious, or are so low-risk that people can’t get stir up enough emotion to argue against them. Forcing people to disagree, or creating a contentious work environment can backfire. As others have stated, just creating a safe space for people to disagree and still be respectful will allow arguments to happen naturally. The other key is hiring a team with diverse experiences and backgrounds.
