Just finished my first year in audit. Recruiter reached out to me for a role with a 30% bump in salary. Total comp included it gets closer to 45%. I actually enjoyed my first year and especially being done with busy season now feeling pretty good. Not at all actively looking to leave, but just looking for advice on if I would be crazy for not pursuing an opportunity for so much more money at least a little further. Really what I care about is my long term career more than anything

What role is it? It’s honestly not hard to get a 30% bump as an associate but I see too many associates leave not realizing that leaving for a senior accountant position is going to cap your advancement potential. It’s not worth the short term pay bump in my opinion!

like

PwC 1 - There are companies that have a similar advancement structure to public accounting where you get a promotion every 2-3 years from associate through the senior manager equivalent.

None of the people leaving talk about it, but the “senior accountant for a few decades and then retire” thing is real.

No one thinks it’ll be them, but it’s a lot easier to put the hours in to advance earlier in your career than later, and public promotes quicker. Imo, the “stay until senior or manager if you can” advice is good advice.

If you enjoyed it, why leave? Sometimes it's not about the money. As you progress in your audit career, your value also increases.

like

Agree with PwC1. Stick around a bit so you are not stuck at the lower levels when you go to industry.

Awesome, thanks for the response! Definitely not going to leave anytime soon then

like

You should always keep an eye out for opportunities out there. There's no harm in learning more. So you can slowly build the skill the market is looking for.

If you’re competent in your job search a 30% bump from Big 4 audit to industry is pretty standard. So if you’re happy where you’re at you might as well stick around for the higher raises and quicker promotions and jump ship later when that 30% bump is on top of a bigger $$$ base

Recruiters just say things to put as many candidates as they can in front of people. I would wait so that you don't waste your time getting in front of really bad company's.
