This seems like a very inefficient path to partner
If this is what you want to do (get deep operating experience and be a partner), I would suggest you make partner first.
I have also seen people coming back at their prior level but then moving up quickly and more importantly being incredibly impactful for the firm and extremely long term contributors when they return.
I did that approach, spent many years in the real world and then came back. I have seen the same many times. One of my favorite M directors who is now retired did this. I was actually his client when I was out of consulting.
Not about efficiency. About getting broader life experience and curiosity as to whether there could be an option to return as a partner later on.
You can return, but in most cases, you’d come back at the level at which you left and keep moving up that way.
Unless you develop a ton of subject matter expertise in a niche topic and come back as an advisory person. But that’s not the same as becoming a partner.

There is nothing about being a Director in industry for 5 years that makes you ready to actually manage consulting projects, let alone develop IP and generate work via relationships.
As stated, the way to partner is faster inside McK. But I have seen people leave at EM level and then come back...at EM level with only 2-3 years experience and at AP level with >5 years experience and a serious industry role. I think the actual role and experience in industry would be more relevant than number of years. Coming back as partner you would need to bring significant expertise/experience. I doubt thats something you would build up in a few years at least if you leave as an EM.
