If your spouse was raised by a highly critical (and highly successful) parent and you can see the effects (self doubt, tendency towards perfectionism, inability to relax or even admit they need to slow down, etc), even if they can’t, how do you navigate this? I fear sometimes I may be making it worse.

This is me. My spouse has invested a lot of her time emphasizing the importance of slowing down, being present, and creating strong, powerful memories as a result of those.

What we’ve found is we need both. If we truly embrace both as two sides of the same coin, we learn to listen and value these personality traits - which makes them assets and not problems

Him??? Amazing…

Reading all this makes me realize how fortunate I have to have a normal mind and be surrounded with normal people. Omg 😆-

Depends on what you mean by navigate. You can and should point out in a constructive way how behaviors affect you and the quality of your relationship. Internalizing it is not doing you or them any good. Keep the phrasing kinda “factual” and nonprescriptive, i.e., when you do this it makes me feel x. In this way you are navigating by protecting yourself, with the side effect of helping them.

What you are doing here is raising the level of awareness and putting the ball in their court. They need to hear it and then figure out if they need to change. Recognizing there is a problem and that change must occur is something they must come to if change is going to happen. This might take time.

If by navigate you mean more actively trying to help them, you can try to look for cultural experiences you can jointly participate in that show that a different way of living is possible and might be preferred to try to catalyze the process of self discovery and awareness. Watch The Matrix, LOST on Netflix, Office Space, even Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Go see Blue Man Group in Vegas or art installations like Meow Wolf. Experience the sublime: national parks, plantariums, etc. These are just ideas. Gotta find things that speak to them. Read books in this genre yourself and see if they take an interest. Same with meditation. Start doing it and share what it does for you. You are trying to trigger a self-realization. It can’t be done directly. Again, this may take time.

I wonder how much is genetic - some folks are just wired that way - not saying the parents had no impact but I suspect it isn’t all nurture

Therapy for you both otherwise it will probably end in divorce.

I’m taking a shot in this bowl with something I posted in the law bowl: I am trying to find an immigration lawyer who will talk to me about how our au pair can possibly become our nanny when her program ends (so she can stay in the US and we can pay her on the books). I know it’s difficult but I’ve heard stories of families doing this. Anyone have any leads?

Any good kitchenaid stand mixer recipes? No attachments yet. Already made a bunch of bread, dough, pita bread, Naan and tons of sweet stuff. Looking for vegetarian options.

I am going through a divorce right now. I currently have a (my) family member stay with me to help take care of my children (until the divorce is finalized). My ex is oppose to my family member staying in the same house and decided to serve a notice to vacancy. However, I live in CA (community property state), and both of our names are on the title. Does my ex have any legal grounds to take such action to evict my visiting family member?

Getting over heartbreak and having a full time job is torture lol. My boyfriend and I just broke up after almost a year of being together. It was such a beautiful relationship but ultimately he just didn’t love me. I love him so much. My mind knows that I deserve reciprocal love and I’m worthy, but I feel physically ill. My body hurts, my stomach is in knots, my head hurts. How is it that I have to mend a broken heart but also meet my billable hours lmao

Whereas Bain & Company has no such minimum tenure requirement. My colleague got promoted in 4th months of joining right out of college.
