Depends on the exit you’re looking for but a lot of in-house jobs open at 5 years
To really have the experience you need to position to an in house job - probably 4-6. I run a small legal team and that’s the sweet spot because it takes that long to finish your “residency” so to speak and become a self sufficient lawyer who can handle matters. (Years 5-7 are usually spent honing your judgment.)
But if you’re miserable, then you’re miserable and there’s no shame in trying to find a better fit.
I’m seeing lots of in house jobs at the 3 year mark, some even lower. Do you think these jobs have a ceiling compared to say the 4-6 year jobs?
Yes
The earliest should be after year 3 or 5. Two reasons: (1) you'll have a decent amount of experience, (2) that's when you can start waiving into other state bars (if you weren't UBE)
I just left after 3.5 years in house and can waive into the state I moved to.
