Neither. You don’t make enough and lording over people at your high school reunion is only fun for like an hour or two.
But really, there are so many places where you can get more bang for your buck. I’m in Philly and it’s great, much more affordable and a lot of clients are in NYC. Before COVID, I lived in a Manhattan hotel and subsidized my meals with per diem. It was perfect.
Pick a state where there is no income tax. You'll have your rent paid for months if you don't pay the state.
“Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.”
Yes this is 100% true
NYC because: diversity, events, frequency of concerts and conventions, nightlife, buzz, international and cosmopolitan vibe, randomness, opportunities, better shopping, amenities, best mix of foods - you can get real pastrami, pizza, trini roti etc in one city, most social city in the western world where you are guaranteed to interact with random people all the time, everything is treated as a big event from Halloween to free Friday’s at Moma to Central Park Summer stage to Cookie Dough store opening, interesting mix of people covering every interest possible, awe inspiring Art Deco architecture and city density, unrealistic stunning surroundings everywhere that feel like you live on a movie set. You can get to Montreal, Boston, Philly or DC in a quick drive for a weekend getaway. You can fly to London in 6 hours and just tap your passport at the e-gate at the border without talking to anyone and be in Central London. Then 2 hour Eurostar to Paris. Upstate NY, Vermont and Maine for skiing and hiking. 2.5 hours to Miami or the Caribbean for quick weekend beach getaway. The only advantage SF has is you can get to Asia faster.
SF is one of the worst cities in America by a lot of metrics including cost
Nyc is cheaper than SF. Outer suburbs in SF are super pricy with no convenience of nyc. But if u wanna be in the outdoors and don’t care about city living, SF is ur place.
NYC. There's a greater range of options and affordability across the area than in SF.
Commuting/transit is cheaper and better in NYC. And don't forget commute length. Living in SF and commuting to a tech company in the south bay is FAR worse than living in Brooklyn and getting to a company in Manhattan.
Bay Area for sure. NY has its grit back and SF is becoming more affordable because woke people are leaving in droves.
Depends on what you value. SF has a very different feel and it’s very easy to get out of the city. You have a lot of incredible weekend options within 3-4 hours. Wine country, Tahoe, Big Sur, Sonoma Coast, etc.
If 140k not including bonuses then I think you can live comfortably in both cities.
I’ve been in NYC at 80k, 100k and now 140k. You can most certainly live here on 80k.. I was going out every weekend and still saving some money on that salary. If I still had outstanding loans, it would have been more difficult.
If I couldn’t live comfortably on 140k here, I’d have a serious spending issue to address.
SF - no competition.
If you’re a single male, New York
If you’re single and interested in men, San Francisco is a good spot to be. The ratio just works in your favor overall.
Lived in both! Can’t go to SF. The smell of weed is ridiculous there. NYC always
Any reason you’re only choosing between those two? 140k won’t afford you a very good quality of life in either unless you’re extremely regimented and frugal. If those are your only two options, I’d say Brooklyn because you can get a good deal in a cool neighborhood.
You can qualify for a $3500 apartment on $140k, which gets you a luxury 1 bedroom condo in Manhattan or right across the rivers in Queens, BK or NJ. Plus you will have enough to go out a few times a week, eat well, travel etc. You won’t save a lot but you can live well as a young single person. Plus you can just get a nice studio in a safe neighborhood for $2500 if you want to save an extra $12k a year.
Neither.
