Neither. You don’t make enough and lording over people at your high school reunion is only fun for like an hour or two.
But really, there are so many places where you can get more bang for your buck. I’m in Philly and it’s great, much more affordable and a lot of clients are in NYC. Before COVID, I lived in a Manhattan hotel and subsidized my meals with per diem. It was perfect.
Pick a state where there is no income tax. You'll have your rent paid for months if you don't pay the state.
“Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.”
Yes this is 100% true
One is an airport, one is a city.
Pro
Nooooooooo. ^This is a trap!
Guaranteed eye roll from anyone living in California.
NYC because of the night life, culture, and better mix of industries
NYC
1. Rent sucks in both places, but maybe slightly less suck in NYC.
2. No car needed
3. City energy is unmatched
4. Multiple industries/better networking opportunities if you decide you want a career change.
Pro
City energy is right. Compare financial district of San Francisco at 7pm to Midtown Manhattan at 7pm and it is apparent.
NYC, SF has a depressing weather and culture. I like energy and proximity to multiple experiences. SF is also expensive and most of your friends will live far away
Chief
NYC. While expensive, rent is a bit cheaper than SF. There’s also substantially more to do, better public transit, better food, and you won’t be hub captive to United.
Chief
True, but UA at EWR is such a vastly inferior option to DL at JFK/LGA.
NYC for literally every reason
Rising Star
SFO for the better weather
NYC. 140k is not that much in either city but at least in NY you can live in one of the boroughs or JC for cheaper rent. There's not much of an option in SF.
Pro
SFO for the nature
Chief
Y’all are responding which you’d like to live at more not the financial part....I’d think nyc would be more affordable but I don’t have any personal experience
Rising Star
NYC, SF is too expensive. NY has a special energy and tons of opportunity if you ever pivot.
Rising Star
Also, not sure why ppl are being insecure and backhandedly dissing your $140k. That’s a great accomplishment and you can live in either city just fine, SF will just have more sacrifices
NYC has more 'affordable' options. You can actually live alone. And you can keep cost low by not having a car. Also cheaper eats in NYC and way more diversity in NYC. NYC is also closer to other major cities compared to sf. And everything finance related. NYC is closer to Europe. Sf does have better weather, nature things, career trajectory is better if you are in tech, closer to Asia. Basically history and culture in NYC with strong individuality and profit seeking motives. Nature and strong communal culture and strong belief in changing the world while making Bank in SF.
Never moving away from NYC area ❤️❤️ I can never miss a day without seeing Manhattan skyline from the nearby waterfront 😅😅
Rising Star
Lived in both. NYC is a much better city. SF lost its luster years ago.
SF. Weather, access to outdoors, people, opportunity.
I am incredibly thankful to everyone that posted here, this has been really helpful. It’s so heartening to see ppl genuinely wanting provide insights and help. Going with the big apple so team NYC wins!😎😄

Excellent choice. Also we don’t call it the Big Apple here. It’s usually just “New York” or “the city.”
Welcome to the center of the universe! Make sure you walk fast and never stand on the left side of an escalator.
I have lived in both. We are missing some of your inputs on what you like in a city.
Do you enjoy hiking and nature? SF
Do you enjoy the activity of a city? NYC
Is diversity important to you? NYC
Is "nice" weather important to you? SF
I personally love NYC more than SF, but both have their charms. It is also easier to find a good deal (housing, restaurants, entertainment) in nyc, so the money goes a little further.
Pro
From a weather perspective SF, from a life perspective NY. SF is a bit more expensive as compared to NY but in NY nowadays you can get a decent 1 bedroom apartment under 2k. NY also gives you access to lots of career opportunities especially in Finance, but if you’re into Tech stay in SF - plenty of opportunities plus higher salaries (assuming you get a position there). Food wise there’s a lot of places in NYC, SF doesn’t compare, however there are some hole in the wall restaurants in SF that will give some of these super famous eateries a run for their money. The commute - NYC is better and dirtier. Plus everyone in the city will be on edge so you have to be on edge too, SF is a little more laid back.
I think this is right.
Weather is better is SF and culture/food/generally being a truly world class city favors NYC.
If you are in Tech opportunities are better in SF (duh) while finance, fashion, media favors NYC.
I think travel opportunities favor NYC a bit too, more cities on the east coast to visit, Europe closer, asia is still 12 hours from SFO so incremental travel time from NYC isn't that much.
Unless I was in tech I would choose NYC.
