If you’ve been laid off and not on a firm website with several month gap, would you put “Independent Research” for the gap on your resume and list bullet points related to associate job you are applying to? Like if it’s a securitization role, bullet points can describe securitization research you are doing and then have paper ready if there are interviews? Hesitant to just have a blank for this time off

Are you doing the research for anyone, or just on your own? I wouldn’t put it if you’re doing it on your own. Instead, try to find some volunteer work you can do to list.

I like that. But “consultant” implies paid gig. How would you handle the bullet points and who would you say you are consulting for

like

I’m planning on going this route as well. I know that having anything is better than a resume gap, but wouldn’t people still assume that I’ve been laid off? I mean who really randomly decides to be a consultant or do independent research when they could put something real on the resume??

I would put consultant

Why don’t you start an llc and say you left to work on a startup

like

If I got laid off and ran out of website, forming an actual startup would be my way. You can actually try a little bit too, with the expectation it might fail. Who knows? Maybe you’ll raise a couple of rounds and cash out a bit too before going back to law.

Don’t do an LLC though, form a DE Corp. it’ll look more legit. No startup worth a damn forms an LLC and if they do, they convert to corp before their first real raise. Exceptions happen, but in my five and some change years of being an ECVC lawyer, I’ve seen exactly one semi successful LLC startup.

You can also take some time to learn how to use ai more effectively on legal settings and say you wanted to stay ahead of the curve. Someone I know recently did that and it was well received.

like

I hate to say it but we see right through all of this. Try to go to a temp legal agency and work that way until you get a long term gig. Be able to explain why you lost your job. It happens. It doesn’t mean you suck—-and it helps if you are coming from a firm that is known to have financial difficulties.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
