What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

What to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed but still need to bill and meet deadlines?

I’m a big law attorney and thinking about getting my real estate license (brother is thinking about the same thing, so we’re thinking to go into some RE investing together). Thoughts? I’ve been negotiating a settlement on behalf of a client. OP is a major corp. we’ve gone back and forth for months, almost a year. Finally came to a final agreement and we’re reviewing for final signature. Then client is reviewing and decides they want something else modified. It’s a point of contention. OP has said no. Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?

Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

When will I find my passion? I’m a criminal prosecutor chasing PSLF (5 years left). I am just not that into it. My wife is a teacher and loves her job so much she could work 16 hour days. Any tips on leaving a firm “correctly”? Was about to go “of counsel” with my firm of 6 years, but then another firm whose partners I really respect (and personally like) offered me a partnership position. I predict my current bosses will *flip* (cut off file access immediately, try to beat me to calling my clients, etc.), so how do I set myself up for a successful transition?
