What matters more to you? Prestige and awards or stability? Figure out what's most important. When I was young and starting out I wanted prestige and awards. Now that I've experienced agency life I want financial stability and actual work life balance more than anything else.
My understanding is if I want financial success in this business I need a kick ass portfolio. I’m in my 30s and I want financial stability. My secondary want is to have a modicum of fun with 10-20% of the work I make. The creatives I see succeeding have all made interesting work (I know awards are only one measure of this). I don’t care about prestige. I just know those with awards tend to have nice careers.
I am 10 years into the industry and I’ve always worked at agencies and I have zero awards.
my classmates who went into tech company creative departments (Facebook, Airbnb, etc) are now probably making double what I’m making.
Eh if you don’t like it, you can always leave. Better to try and know than wonder, imo.
Used to chase “exciting work” and awards. Late 30s now and don’t care at all about that. Only care about retirement savings and quality of life.
Thinking more on it, I wonder if there’s a middle ground. I’m ok with fun work, doesn’t need to be groundbreaking. I did boring headlines and banner ads for one account for 5 months and i’ve never been more miserable. I was ecstatic when they lost the account and let me go even though I had no backup plan.
Awards are funded by agencies and will soon become meaningless
I would focus on your compensation packages and upward trajectory.
