Commercial is so much better than ID. Better rates, more interesting subjects (at least IMO). I started in ID with a small amount of commercial here and there, moved to fully commercial and then recently to L&E to get a more narrow focus. I always knew I wanted to do business type litigation and commercial lit really helped me find the area I wanted to focus on. Just play up your litigation experience. There’s definitely a learning curve but the general work up of the file is the same. Your ID skills are definitely transferable.
Thank you so much!
Those hours tho 😵💫
ID can be limiting from a subject matter perspective, and also a research ability perspective. For the latter, it is not that you are not smart or cannot do research, you just generally do not get to do much of it in ID. Perhaps be prepared for a question on that if they are direct. Fortunately, you can presumably retort with a shitload of practical experience (appearances; depositions; mediation; client management; etc.). Maybe have some numbers ready (you’ve taken X percipient witness depositions; Y party depositions; argued Z dispositive motions).
This is definitely something I've appreciated being a part of ID. Where I am, we're thrown into the fire, from conversations with adjusters, to working a file up. Will definitely make a list of the various experiences I've had.
