I’m an associate looking to make a career move to a bigger city -New York, Chicago, Seattle, etc.- not super picky, just looking for a change and a challenge. Coming from a firm where I’ve done quite a bit - litigation, family law, and soft IP. Wanting to move into an IP centered role but I’m open to staying with litigation or family law as well. Mostly want to get out of my current city. Any advice?

Bigger city will mean longer hours. Particularly NY. NY is, last I checked, more expensive than anywhere but SF or DC for rent, food. Pass the bar or waive in where you want to go, but how many years do you have? In litigation you are going to need to know both the local court rules, but also how people actually practice, since black letter lar on discovery is never applied strictly.

Will depend substantially on your credentials and experience. Biglaw in major markets is a wildly competitive market even if you’re already there. Coming in from the outside is even more challenging.

Should consider LA. There’s such a wide range of needs and options professionally, and personally there is so much to do and places to live and things to do.

After my PG, I spent 8 months looking for a job, my current company interviewed me for Technical project manager, but they offered me the role of a PC. I accepted it without negotiating as I did not want to lose the opportunity, I am extremely underpaid and I have been doing the job of 3 people, as my company keeps firing folks. I’ve lost all my confidence.

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).
