Does the industry pay well? I’ve been interested in doing music my whole life, I just don’t know if I can really support myself going full time. What’s your experience?
My experience is you absolutely can make money in this space, it’s just highly competitive. I work downtown Chicago at a Sports Marketing and video events place. We create shows for ESPN and CBS. I do a lot of the productions.
It’s possible but I personally think you have to be incredibly hungry to actually have a good salary. I make around 55k at 24yrs old now so I think that’s okay
Do not apply to positions where you see 100,400,2000 applicants. The may not be real position, real hiring desire. 45-65 dollar per hour, minimum rate.
I totally agree with that one. I was applying for places like Netflix but they get so many applications it seems almost pointless
The best way to make something happen it’s just to do it so if you want to make a movie do it. Happy to have a conversation if you’d like that’s the kind of motivation you need just do it.
Why don’t you DM are and we can set a time to chat.
Hello I’m a music producer / musician and I’ve been trying to get into more tv media, sports, and movie/ documentary work. I have a wide sound and I’m 24 as well and looking to grow into something fresh like your visions instead of being more application fodder to millions of requests.
Definitely!
The path to producing in film and TV starts on set as a PA (line producer) or at a desk as an assistant (development/creative producer or production executive). If you aren't willing to start there, then keep doing what you are doing and find film projects to work on as a hobby. But if you want to be in that world there will never be a better time to start the long path.
If you want to be a line producer or work in physical production in general, get a PA job on a big show and tell everyone you know that you want to be a UPM and eventually a line producer. You'll want to work in the production office so you work directly with those people (versus being on set where everyone else is trying to be).
If you want to work in creative or be on the studio side, look for an assistant job at a reputable company with least one project that you like. Another alternative would be to take an assistant job at an agency or larger talent management company and then move to a production company/studio. Most of these jobs are in LA/NY.
Expect 2-3 years as an assistant, then likely a few years as a lower level exec, before gaining more autonomy and creative involvement as you build more experience. Pay starts around 50-65k plus benefits depending on the size of the company, and then when you become a coordinator or CE it'll go up to the 75-85 range. Salaries don't get really good for a long time, but people with 7+ years of experience often earn 200k+.
I worked in video production before switching over, so I imagine our experiences have some overlap. Happy to talk if you'd like more info.
