I’m applying for some openings in Amazon. I came to know from some folks (all of them were non-consulting background) the work culture there is brutal. Anyone has any clue on how bad it is?

It depends on the team, but there's definitely not a focus on work life balance. I interned there during my mba and consulting leaves more time for family, shockingly.

There is a NYT article. Search for it.

like

I think it is overblown. Sure, many teams work long hours, but if you can handle the consulting grind, I don't believe Amazon's WLB is any worse. I'm from Seattle and have a lot of friends at Amazon, and they work way less than I do.

like

Have interviewed there before, left a bad taste in my mouth. Don't take calls from their recruiters anymore. Be careful.

like

From what I understand they have an incentive program to report on your co-workers if you think they're not doing their job well. Basically a back stabbing culture.

like

My best friend works there. They had him on graveyard shift for the first two years. You have to get “indoctrinated”.

Says the culture sucks, hours suck. But he’s making good money.

They gave him 50k of stock options when he started right out of undergrad in 2014. Gave him several years to exercise at the locked in price of the stock ~ $300 when he joined. (Now $1900)

So he’s sitting on over 300k just in his stock options that he only paid 50k for.

4 years outta under grad and he’s already pulling in 150ish total comp

If thats the track for a young kid outta undergrad I can’t imagine what your comp would be. Again the culture is toxic and sucks.

I also interned there. Would have gone back if not for some personal reasons - I had a fantastic internship. Absolutely it is a demanding place to work, but I found less than consulting. It does vary a lot by team though.

like

C1 agree. The negative is more about the culture of certain teams and poor management than work life balance. I'm sure most consultants would find it much more flexible by comparison. I have many post MBA classmates there.

like

I’ve heard the same

There have been news stories and various articles on this... would be good to hear in this forum from someone who has actually worked for corporate.

Sister worked there for 7 years and just quit. Yes brutal is accurate

If you are smart and talented and hard working and professionally driven you will likely find Amazon’s culture enervating, stimulating, challenging, rewarding. If you are not, you will hate it, utterly.

Haven't heard of the details, but my cousin went from working at Microsoft for 5+ years to Amazon for maybe a year and went back to Microsoft. He says at Microsoft their idea of flex hours is, "You can work whatever 80 hours per week you want."

Looking to get a bit of insight on breaking into tech working as an executive assistant after working for BigLaw for 20+ years.

I've been applying to tech companies for executive assistant positions - in particular, remote work positions - and I have yet to get a nibble.

I'm extremely tech savvy and have a lot of initiative but I am afraid that these companies are put off by how long I've been working assuming that I am a middle-aged woman that is not able to go with the flow.

3. Any similar interviews experiences or focus areas I should prepare for?
