I’m currently working at a firm and also studying to become a therapist. My eventual goal is to open my own therapy practice. At some point, I’ll need to quit my day job as an attorney so I can focus on getting licensed, but I keep dragging my feet. I think part of it is the fear of the unknown and/or failure, but I’m also afraid I may miss the law. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Or anyone have regrets after leaving the law? Or, has anyone tried juggling 2 careers at once?

Thank you! This was somehow exactly what I needed to hear right now.

I agree with A1 - Congrats on the progress you’ve made towards taking that leap! If you miss practicing law, you can always go back in some capacity even if it’s part time solo practice. I have not juggled two careers yet, but I am definitely considering it (part time law practice and commercial real estate broker)

So curious...what does it take these days to be a licensed therapist

like

I left the law for 2.5 years, came back to make more money, and regret coming back more than I regret leaving.

like

What did you do when you left?

like

Will you become a therapist focused on assisting attorneys? That sounds like a great and lucrative nice. You’ll make it work!

like

Yes, I’m hoping to work with attorneys in my private practice as I know first hand how hard this profession can be on mental health :)

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
