My favorites are the ones where you need to concept, write, shoot, edit, and do the graphics.
You’re definitely winning now, compared to the rest of us. You’ve been able to position yourself in opportunities that allowed you to grow those skills. Rest of us got pigeon holed
Good for you, your future is bright
Yes. Creative Producer. Digital Producer. Gaming Producer. Content Producer. It varies by client and agency. Frankly, I think these posts are by people who don’t get the difference or don’t understand that your Basic Producer with years of experience can provide a wealth of options.
I have always understand the versatility of a producer role. But what I’m finding more and more are positions that utilize the description of “Producer” to describe something completely different. I’ve seen everything from animation and video editing to strategy.
It’s because the nature of the industry is changing. People are consuming content faster than we can create it...and companies don’t have the budgets to keep up. We no longer can afford to have “experts” in one area of production. Instead, we’re having to broaden the scope of what producers do- to save money/cut costs. As a result, you have a bunch of agencies who think that being a “jack of all trades” is the way to go- rather than hiring people who are masters of their craft. Thus the producer roles with descriptions that sound like creative directors, videographers, etc. The role of a producer is too broad now- and it may save money but it’s going to hurt agencies in the long run.
I was interviewed via phone by an internal recruiter for a “hot” agency who asked me, “how do you go about setting up your post production?”
My response, “....what am i producing? What’s my timeline? What’s my budget? Where am I? Where is the client?...”
Recruiter, “it’s a simple question”.
And that’s why we are all fucked in this system
Yep. Insurance people are calling themselves Producers. WTF?
the fields of insurance, real estate, agriculture and I’m sure others use the term producer. Happens to mean something very different. It’s not a word that we made up ourselves 😉 colorists can grade film or do hair
Yes. Very difficult and producer position is defined a multiple ways. Categories now include account manager/producer as some functions. Several companies in same industry are defining roles in vastly different ways, even within same company there are producer roles that differ. On the one hand it shows what a variety of roles that a producer takes on, which is a plus, on the other it seems to be being used as a catch all for positions that are not clearly defined. It’s definitely the Wild Wild West out there.
