I’m going to be traveling next week and the partner told me not to bill the time I spend organizing, making to-do lists, and otherwise getting another associate up to speed on the deal to cover while I’m out. Is this typical?

Preparing matter hand off sounds billable to me.

This sounds like a partner problem. It very likely cannot be billed out, but that’s different than it not being billable (and thus getting billable credit).

That said, if you are only gone a week that should be what, a half hour? Maybe an hour if the time they are covering for you is expected to include something more substantive than monitoring for emails? Also, it’s 2026, where are you traveling that you are not reachable at all?

This^^

You do what the partner tells you to do, unless you never want to work with him again. That’s just the practicality of this job.

like

Increasingly, yes. There are certain clients that straight up won't pay for administrative tasks like this. Since these tasks are only necessitated by you being OOTO, think about it from the client's perspective and whether you'd want to pay extra for that. It sucks, but is what it is.

like

Yeah it should either (i) be billable for the associate and the partner deals with the write-off or (ii) creditable with a separate non billable c/m that still counts for bonus. Nonsense that they wouldn’t let associate get credit for it even if it’s understandable that clients wouldn’t want to pay.

Although when I was in-house I’d approve bills that included reasonable-ish handoff time. I’d rather pay for that and know we’re in good hands while someone is on vacation or leave than the alternative

Firms should give you credit for this (or better yet not even have a billable target).

like

That's billable. Whether the client will pay is the partner's problem, particularly if the partner knew you were going to be traveling.
