When’s your review cycle? Are you eligible for a bonus? Do you want a pay increase? Get clear on what you want and when’s the moment to ask.
This said, I also think having regular dialogue with your manager about career progression, giving / receiving progress, and making your wants known is what’s up as an evergreen thing.
Kudos for advocating for yourself! I was very passive about my career (they’ll recognize me for my contributions and reward me one day!) for a long time — it didn’t pay off.
Ohh
Also make sure there is a Sr AD role available. Just because you want a promotion to a new job doesn’t mean you have clients willing to pay for that position. But having regular check ins with your ECD to remind her that you’re working toward this will ensure she thinks of you when a position is available at that level.
There is. A colleague was supposed to get it but they left so they declined it.
So you think having this conversation with my ECD would be ok? What would you say is the best way to approach them?
Absolute mandatory in addition to hitting the milestones is seeding that shit earlyyyyyy with your manager. In most places, your manager needs to literally make a case arguing for your promotion and that budget needs to be allocated. Halfway to your performance review and again several months before is probably the minimum.
Even if you hit all the milestones, if you show up to your review assuming it’s a done deal without and reminders/vocalization, then you are most likely going to be disappointed.
Assuming all the stars align; there’s a position open, funding is in a good place, etc, I’d approach your manager or ECD and give them a heads up about it informally.
I’d make sure to keep the “unofficial pre meeting ” super brief to gauge temperature to read the room- NOT to convince them you deserve it. I find there’s always something happening behind closed doors in terms of hiring and promos.
I find managing your expectations and putting yourself on the radar are super important in not feeling like you got blind sided. I feel like you can get a pretty good gauge from their initial reactions. Good luck
