I’m looking to get out of agency work. It’s just too volatile right now.

I applied for a job where the salary cap is 148, but I make 160 right now. I’m way overqualified compared to their requirements but I think I’d really love this job and this place. Regardless I need to get out of agency work. Now.

Anyway, the question is, when they ask me specifics about money, can I say anything about my worth being higher? Or is that in bad taste since I knew the salary range from the beginning?

Lead with value first. Not because you’re paid $160K it means you could be worth $160K to someone else.

If you come off as “I already make more and I’m doing you a favor because I’m OQ and will take a pay cut” it might just end your chances right there.

If you truly want the job, go through the process and negotiate like anyone else does.

If you already know their budget, use that to your advantage, set a salary range that you’d be comfortable lowering to, then work with whatever offer you get and counter by leaning into your potential value to this new place.

Also do not say anything related to “slowing down” as part of your reasoning to moving to this job. That will blow your chances too. Make sure you appear engaged and interested like you would if you were applying to this job and really excited at the prospect.

And in return, discreetly gauge if place is for you during the process.

I am hopefully preparing for a similar conversation though I told them I'm at the top of their range. I'm going in with stating that after learning more about the role throughout the interview process, I believe the title wouldn't be commensurate with my experience. I'll ask if they can bump it up which hopefully will open up a higher range. Will report back if it works!

You can potentially bring it up, but I would be very mindful about how you do it. If they are up front and transparent about it from the start, I probably wouldn’t push too hard. If you are open to other things, you could try to find some non-salary means to make the offer better on your end.

Salary adjacent compensation such as a one-time type of signing bonus, stock or equity, tuition reimbursement, or professional development stipend. Flexible work hours, PTO (that one is a bit tough, usually set in stone across the company), mentoring, or promotion/raise transparent path. I’d try to get a feel for what the company would be more open to and choose based on what I’d like to see and feel is more likely for them to agree to.

smart

Can I ask what type of job you applied for? I too want to get out of advertising/agency life 🥺

So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.

So glad I found this bowl. How do you go about negotiating your salary? I applied for a new role and was offered the job. But the pay we haven’t discussed yet. I never did this and heck I don’t know where to start.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
