I’m pregnant with my second and just found out I have gestational diabetes and I am not handling it well. I’m barely holding it together As it is with work, a toddler, and my spouse who works in film is literally gone from 6am to 9pm. Having to think about what I eat feels impossible. I cried myself to sleep and feel so depressed.

I was diagnosed with GD on my first baby and worried myself sick about it. The doctor kept telling me I was en route to deliver a 14 lb baby and we were both in serious jeopardy. I cut out carbs, ate eggs and healthy food, blood tested 5 times a day as per doctor’s orders and was a nervous wreck right up until I went into labor and the doctor still kept telling me this enormous baby was coming. The baby popped out and was 6 pounds. If I could have gone back in time I’d have gotten a second opinion, talked to other moms with GD to see how to manage my diet, and seen it all as another perfectly normal part of many pregnancies rather than what I thought it was, which was the end of the world. Every mom’s journey is different, but I learned on the next pregnancy that talking with other moms made all the difference in the world, mentally.

Thanks all so much. I’m feeling better. Been tracking numbers for a few days and it’s been going well. As long as I balance carbs or sugar with protein everything seems ok. I’m sure it will get old soon. The garbage we have to put up with...

I’m so sorry. That is the last thing anyone needs right now. No advice, just here with you.

You’re going to be okay. Your babe is going to be okay. Im dealing with it too and am pregnant with my second. I met with a dietician at my doctors insistence and it’s easier than you think it’s going to be to modify or manage your diet. It def isn’t the most welcome news but you can do this.

I hear you. It’s the last thing I want to pay attention to right now. But I think after the first couple of weeks it will be second nature. You’ll just know what you can and can’t eat and how much. I still have half a bagel in the morning with my eggs. I was just grateful I didn’t have to go on a no carb diet. That would have been cruel.

I also had GD and found the book Real Food for Gestational Diabetes by Lily Nichols to be really helpful! My fave low-ish carb snacks...
-peanut butter, celery or half apple
-cheese, salami
-yogurt
-almonds (choc covered as a treat)
-carrots, hummus
Keto is actually great for this since it’s all about minimizing carbs. Just watch out for some of the tricks they use to count less carbs, that could still spike your blood sugar.

My biggest advice is to drink tons of water, and go easy on yourself when you have bad numbers. Your hormones are changing and your body won’t always respond the same to the same food.

I also had gestational diabetes with my first and cried a lot at the beginning. I’m now pregnant with my second and have to have the GD at 16 weeks and dreading it. I think the tips above are really good, I could have carbs as long as I balanced it with protein. Diet Coke was my friend. Also look at Keto snacks, they are usually GD friendly!

I’m so so sorry. That is brutal. Be kind to yourself. Don’t make yourself crazy. Do what you can to make easy healthy choices. Maybe breakfast you have eggs and a piece or toast instead of cereal (unless u hate eggs.) and lunch just eat whatever— u need energy especially midday. Dinner try a rotation of protein and veggie like sweet potato. And for snacks just go all in on fruit, which should satisfy some sweet cravings plus it will help fill u up. And eat the damn chocolate if u want it. Honestly if u find a few options for meals and snacks you can just put them on rotation.

I was wondering how you were doing! You’ve got this. You’ve done hard things before. You can do this too!

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes for both my pregnancies. It’s hard. The mandatory group nutrition class I had to take twice for insurance was tedious. What kept me going was that it was temporary. If you have a nutritionist, tell them what the barriers are, lean on them to brainstorm solutions. They know that not everyone’s life circumstances are the same and can help think of ways for you and your spouse to help each other be successful.

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.

I try to bring it up and I get dismantled for being too mean and making “false accusations.” How much more obvious can it be?
