A response to everyone who says honesty is the best policy and that ‘any good supervisor will understand,’ No. Knowledge is power; keep it.
3 reasons off the top:
-By willfully taking company time to interview, you are technically stealing. Can be cause, if you get on someone’s bad side
- By telling a manager, who has a duty to protect the company, you may be the first to be shut outside when it’s good for the company, not when it’s good for you
- It WILL affect potential promotions if word gets out you’re not in it for the long haul.
Just...avoid.
Someone on my team expressed that they were interviewing recently. If we need to cut staff, you can guess who’s at the top of the list. Keep it to yourself.
I will add my manager is redoing her basement and the amount of times she has to work from home to let someone in, check on work, etc is crazy. Saving that one too.
Is that code language for getting liposuction?
Just tell them you’re looking 🤷🏻♀️ sounds like you’re done, sure they would appreciate the heads up and lead time to replace you rather than stuffing you quickly out the door

Agree with most of these, but a great one for everyone not in NYC - “I’m picking my friend up from the airport at 4:30” means you can usually leave by 3 and take a 3:30 or 4pm interview.
Don’t make excuses just block off the calendar time and go. They are not watching every single move.
Why do people feel the need to come up with excuses? You can use your paid time off to attend to personal business, the nature of which concerns nobody else. It’s not marriage.
Make up an autoimmune disease, be serious about it and tell HR what's happening. Auto immune diseases are super hard to diagnose and take a lot of doctors appointments to figure out

I just had this problem this week. I asked the Telnet team to request that the hiring manager meet with me before work. She was happy to do it.
With all of these excuses, it’s important to remember that your style of dress is suitable for the occasion. Don’t walk into work like you came from a wedding reception with your hair and nails done (guys get that done too, at least I do) when you said you had to pay a parking ticket or get a colonoscopy.
This is why the more vague, the better.
Try and take 1-2 personal days next to each other if you can, and book all your interviews on those days. Then you can get a few in back to back on days you’re off. Otherwise, the usual doctor/apartment/errands/sick are the go to.
Back problems are so common in office workers who sit most of the day. Usually they require doctor visits, specialist visits, MRIs, and then weeks of physical therapy at 2 or 3 visits per week. If you really want to sell it, casually ask if your company offers standing desks. Note: you may have to be prepared to actually use a standing desk--do you really want a new job that badly?

So many of these would mean you’re taking only a few hours away. What if you’re flying across the country? Take a “long weekend” to catchup on housework or to visit family
Say you have a doc appointment and are hoping “to get that little problem fixed."
Dental work—say they can’t do both sides of your mouth at the same time if you get questions. You can also then have problems with it and need to go back to have it repaired. Also explains why you can’t answer phone, etc.
Ask if they’d like to meet you after hours for a ramen esp if it’s a quick jump onto a train for them to get home. If they accept enthusiastically I know it’s a gonna be a good fit 😉
Apartment maintenance, gotta be there to let them in. Take a sick day. For the late ones leaving early to meet with an old colleague in town for the night, furniture delivery, bike/car issues, lunch with an old client or vendor, family in town for a short stay, etc
