I’m SM at a F100 with a strong brand, “good culture” and good benefits making 180k. Got an offer for a Director at lesser-known F500 for 210k. It’s a no brainer right? Not trying to humble brag just afraid of making the wrong choice and need a gut check

Firstly, congratulations on the offer!

I’m someone who always trusts my gut, even when the numbers suggest otherwise. If I were in your position, I’d try to learn as much as possible about the new company’s culture, especially your prospective manager, by reaching out to people in my network.

The difference between $180K and $210K is meaningful, but I wouldn’t let the salary alone drive the decision if the work culture isn’t a good fit. A healthy work environment and a supportive, compassionate manager are often worth far more in the long run.

If I were you, I’d do thorough research on the new company’s culture before leaving what already seems like a great culture at your current employer.

I don’t think so, I’ve shared more another reply below but I’ve been trying that for a while and it hasn’t worked out for various reasons!

like

Yeah no brainer! Unless the new opportunity comes with a horrible commute and crazy WLB. If anything, maybe the smaller F500 moves quicker and is more agile than the F100 so you can make stronger impact.

like

Commute is the same but they seem equally slow and old fashioned if not more so haha

I’m old and we always said if you’re jumping for money, you better get at least 25% more to compensate for having to rebuild your network and all that.

In other words, no, it’s not a no-brainer at all. Jump if it’s a better opportunity and landing spot - don’t jump just for the cash.

like

Agreed. I wouldn’t jump for $30k. It’s nothing. But if you jump for better progression opportunities, yes.

Congrats on the new offer. Here is how I would break this down. If this is purely a financial decision then a pay bump is a pay bump. If not, you’re only make $2.5K more a month pre tax, so you’ll still need to factor in increased taxes and 401K contributions. That being said, if there are other factors that make this a better decision long term (better growth potential, you’re doing better work, title bump as well), then it becomes closer to a no brainer. If you’re giving up a stronger network/solid career path I would see if the extra monthly money is worth the things you’d be giving up at your current place.

like

I don’t think the growth opportunities are there at my current company so I probably need to jump for the progression. I almost feel like I’ve earned a reputation as a workhorse and it’s prevented me from being seriously considered for leadership roles, if that makes sense? I’ve been trying for a long time and nothing worked out until I looked externally. It’s the same industry, so the network will still be valuable long term.

like

A bit low for Director but a great stepping stone!

like

Titles are not equivalent across companies. I know Directors making 100k, and others making over a million.

like

Always do your due diligence. Look up the company on glassdoor, find out about the culture and work life balance. Look up the team, the hiring manager. Post on Fishbowl to see if others have worked there. Make sure the bump is commiserate with what industry is paying. Not raining on your parade, but double check if you haven't. Congratulations and good luck!

like

Hah nobody responded to my earlier post on fishbowl 😭 so definitely lesser known

like

It’s 30k more, in this economy you gotta take it. What’s the worse that can happen, you don’t like it and look somewhere else in 12+ months…

like

Yes and please negotiate the offer! You never have more bargaining power than when you're coming into a new role. Get a coach, extra time off, etc. Ask for what you need especially if they can't match on the money

I'm an introverted person, like to keep to myself, focus on work, spend the rest of my time on family, gym etc. I've been told that I need to work on my communication and client relationship building skills. any books I can read? I don't follow pop. culture anymore, no longer actively follow team sports (but sporty myself) as I consider it bread and circus for the masses and don't rly enjoy work drinks... Am I doomed? Personally I am happy and love the work but fear for my career progression.

What do you think about the mismatch of labor and employment laws and the modern nature of our economy after the technological boom? Am I the only one who thinks (and am I crazy to think) there are some benefits to workers from the gig economy, and it might be best long term to pass new employment laws to ensure worker protections while maintaining these benefits instead of trying to shove the current gig economy back into the 1960s? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
