Honestly, I spent an extended period of time basically doing “nothing”. It takes a little time to readjust, but you find ways to fill your day. You get to pick what you do and don’t want to do. I am a pretty tightly wound person, so the do nothing was a stretch, but it totally brought me back to normal.
That feeling doesn’t go away by itself. If you have the ability and means to do something else, go for it.
Find a hobby that involves making something tangible. (Read “Shop Class as Soulcraft” if you want to understand why working with your hands will make you feel better, though you don’t need to read the book in order for the advice to work.)
I mean that’s the point of a sabbatical right? To take time to figure out what you like without having to devote 8+ hours a day to your job.
Work toward saving money that allows you to take a significant time off without a job, find out ways you can downsize financially (I.E. if you are able to, moving back in with your parents or a cheaper area where rent isn’t as expensive)
Also if you’re able to pre-sabbatical, figure out how you could spend your time. Is there a hobby you always wish you had more time to enjoy? Is there a certain class you wanted to take? Definitely plan for some time at the beginning to just rest and decompress but make sure you don’t just spend a very long period of time just sitting around on the couch
Hope this helps! I’ve been toying with taking a sabbatical as well and I hope things work out for you!
I was the same. Are you burnt out because of overworking? When I moved to an agency with better work hours and work life balance, I found passion for work and other things in life again. Because I actually have time to enjoy life. Do things that make me happy. I truly hope things get better for you
Yep. I was there right before the pandemic. I quit my job and fucked off to Puerto Rico, then Guatemala hoping to learn Spanish…then the pandemic happened. Got to Belize as well before heading home. If you aren’t feeling it - clearly sticking it out isn’t working. If you can just take a breath and a moment for yourself it’s worth it homie. I started freelancing and started actually enjoying advertising again. I’m back full time now and guess what? I don’t like it and want to go off wandering again. Our souls were meant for more. Do something for you.
