I’m so ticked. BDO gave me a raise and then laid me off because they can’t afford. I reached my committed hours at 100% last year and maintained 95% for this quarter. At least the MPO was straight forward of their financial situation

Imagine being 20 weeks pregnant during the pandemic, exceeding all metrics and being laid off after busy season. Only reason is that it was “business.” I was a newer higher and pay was higher.

It sucks and you’re not the only one to experience this. I hope you’ll land on your feet soon.

No apologies. That was my situation. But, just want to give you perspective. It could be worse. And, the way employees treat its most valuable assets suck.

Use this time to learn the lessons, take a break and be as intentional and strategic as you can for your next role.

BDO is such a dumpster fire. Case study in poor management and leadership. Better things await OP.

I just resigned and got a big raise+title promotion from a different firm. BDO is unfortunately a Titanic. let’s see if things can turn around the corner in a year or so.

If you don’t mind, can you please let us know what level you are now and pay? Thx!

That explains the lack of raises and bonuses… must be those ESOP IOUs we’ve been writing. I sure hope we’re paying down that borrowed money really fast

They also take a line of credit for wages, so I’m told. So that’s not the only liability.

So sad to hear what is happening at BDO, I grew up in the firm, internship and 4 years after that, but in 2017 they started pushing out older more experienced and expensive people and I lost a lot of mentors and my trust in the firm, I left shortly after that. You will land on your feet OP, not so sure how BDO will do long term if it keeps doing things like this.

That's great! The audit and tax world is smaller than you think, if you have good people willing to help you, that is better than any head hunter. There is still a serious undersupply of CPAs and for whatever reason, AI has a very hard time with our work at least the higher level items where judgement and experience are important. I doubt you will need more than a couple of weeks to find something good. Good luck!

When you say the MPO was straight forward with their financial situation, what exactly did he say was the financial situation?

There seems to be a lot of this going around. Our SSL is growing but not by enough. So we are getting pressured to work more before year end.

It doesn't make sense to me because our engagements are really profitable. Unless there are several people just not working because they aren't on engagements.

Hi OP, there was no way BDO could not afford a L5…they just wanted a cheaper replacement. if you like public accounting, just go ahead and apply for a different firm

smart

Yikes.. glad I didn’t move forward with BMO.

OP, what was your level at BDO?

L5. I also had a lot of tier 1 clients

I am writing this message besides the staff group of EY GDS. Specifically Staff -1 at assurance level. I would request everyone to spare few minutes and read it -

Wanted to bring out that staff-1's are paid peanuts (3.33L CTC) please don't expect them to slog 12-13 hours. They don't have enough motivation or incentives to work that long. Seniors,AM's and Managers should be more kind and explain the work to them clearly rather than making last minute changes.

Hi all! I need some candid advice from y'all. How do I get my manager to see my value and see that I'm actually doing a lot of work? For some reason all the other departments & teams I work with always say how grateful they are that I've joined the company because I've really been cleaning things up & making their lives way easier. But for some reason in my manager's eyes all I do is "meets expectations". I already am doing senior level work as the only senior on our team left a month in... (1)

Hi all, recently in touch by Spotify recruiter for a Sec Engineer position for remote EU and was told that range was 60-80 out of base salary and equity. Had 2 years of security experience out of my 4 years. Was also told that there is no bonus scheme or no sign in bonus 😕 Not sure how I feel about this tbh.

What do you think?

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?
