I’m starting grad school in the fall and want to take a 6ish week break of freedom using the PTO I have versus quitting and losing my benefits for that time and getting paid out for my PTO. I would quit right before school starts/when I run out of PTO. Has anyone done this? Would this make me at risk of getting laid off while on a PTO without a project? Would that even matter? I’m going to grad school for a career change if that makes a difference. Thanks!

We flew back from Ireland today on Delta. Our connecting flight from JFK at 6:10 was cancelled while we were flying over the Atlantic Ocean, and we were rebooked on a 3:40 instead (2.5 hours earlier) but not notified. Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
