Trying to erase history doesn't change it...it just makes it harder to learn from it...
One could, and I believe should, argue that naming or honoring any confederate soldier was/is an attempt to erase history. By honoring terrorist who literally fought to overthrow the government and divide this country leads people to believe that confederates were good people; thereby erasing the fact of what they were fighting for.
The only fight should be to ensure that this is cemented in history books so it is NEVER forgotten. After all we didn’t name any bases in Germany after Hitler.
I understand what you mean about feeling sad to lose the traditional names of the Army bases, but I think changing the names will be for the best overall. It's a complicated emotional situation for many, but ultimately, it's best not to put any leader on a pedestal who dehumanizes others.
I agree with the above, why are we erasing history? History teaches us lessons and we learn from those lessons.
I can understand this emotional response, especially if you are from the south. I'm sure you understand why they are changing it, so can you think of any other way to solve the problem besides changing the names? I think it's difficult to think of alternatives so that's why I ask.
I don’t feel bad about the name changes other then the fact these people may be forgotten for the deeds they did and that needs to be remembered. We need to remember who they are so when someone decides to walk in their shoes they can know the consequences and we can know the course of action.
