That sounds inline with agency director/editor salaries I’ve heard of. If the agency is allowing you build a directing portfolio and you wouldn’t yet get hired for those directing jobs while freelance, the spots are very valuable for your reel. If you have the network/connections, and portfolio to get hired as a freelancer regularly already, yes you could be making more.
So a director with a production company can make anywhere from 3k-20k per shoot day on a commercial shoot, depending on background and project scale. Keep in mind s/he won’t get paid for prep days, pitch time, etc. Some live comfortably and some can barely make rent. You’re making on the low end but it’s not unreasonable, especially if you’re not in a huge market and/or if you’re early in your career. But good experience especially getting to handle it turnkey n
When I mentioned handling it turn-key I’d meant doing the editing as well (turn-key generally means handling from start to finish, even past the point of the offline edit), but that probably wasn’t clear. Editing your own work as a director lets you really put your stamp on the work and flex different muscles (or forces you to, depending how you feel about it- some might consider it a slog). Directors at production companies generally don’t edit their own work- they’ll have editors they like to work with, and some will want to be heavily involved in the edit, to a point, but that’s a whole other thread. But all directors do need to know how to shoot for the edit (especially with short form work where you need to pack a lot of story into a :30, :15 or :06) to get those moments. In terms of compensation, based on what I know it sounds like you’re not crazy low for what you’re doing. In-house production and post will almost always bill at lower rates than outside prodcos and edit houses. Curious, are you shoots on an in-house stage, or larger location-based productions?
That seems low for projects with those budgets. Directors on jobs that big would be $20k directors. I rep a prod co and we usually assume 10% of budget will
Go to Director. I’m surprised you are doing shoots with that size budget. I would love to see the work. DM me if you are interested in chatting. I work with a wide range of directors and would be happy to
