Even if it means a very long pause, crafting the correct response is more important than the right answer.
"I have not had the opportunity to explore ____ but look forward to working with (person A) and (person B) who have had a bit more experience with it. Perhaps they can shed some light on this, better than I can."
First thing I learned as a PM when talking to a client is you have to clearly understand the problem. What is the client trying to accomplish with a product or product feature when asking their question? Understand your own product and determine if it can accomplish what’s needed and if not have client define what the requirements are that the product may not have today. As a PM you have to be prepared to ask your own questions to get clarity before answering.
It's not a problem to not know everything.
I've never been in a position where it hurt to say "I don't know, but I'll figure it out". I find that people appreciate and respect the honesty (assuming I then figure it out like I promised).
