It’s really hard to make the leap to management. Many times they only want a few years of work experience but expect you to have management experience. It’s a catch 22. You can parlay project or team experience, but it sounds like you have someone recommending you even without management chops. If it’s not a salary cut, I might be inclined to take it. Walmart is a good company for career growth.
Let them know you have a different offer that is offering somewhere around 120k-125k, and you would love this experience with them, so if there is anyway for them to match the offer, that’ll be much appreciated. And then see what they come back with.
If you really love the role and would gain the necessary experience for the next level up, then take the offer and get started. I would say, you should probably, most definitely make above 100k for the amount of work you are about to put in… not the mention the headache of managing people, and the economy… wheeeww. Don’t get me started. 🤣
The previous manager recommended you knowing that you don’t have management experience I’m sure. They are playing games and I would respond something like this:
Thank you for the offer and for considering me for this opportunity. I’m excited about the potential to contribute to *company name* and to lead the *department name* team.
Given my extensive industry experience and the scope of this leadership role, I’d like to discuss the compensation. While I appreciate the offer of $100K, I was expecting something closer to $130K, considering the responsibilities and my expertise in this field. Would it be possible to meet at $120K–$125K? I truly believe this adjustment better aligns with the value I bring to the role.
That said, if this isn’t feasible at this time, I would love to discuss the possibility of a pay adjustment following a performance evaluation at the six-month mark. I’m confident that my contributions will demonstrate my value in this leadership role.
I’m very enthusiastic about joining the team and look forward to your thoughts. Please let me know if we can find a middle ground.
Wait till you have the offer . If they ask you about salary prior ask for their range and then say that you would be at the very top of it and it would be a completely lateral move for you. That will signal to them that this literally would not be a pay bump for you. Then when you get the offer… you negotiate.
Anytime you’re leading people in addition to doing a pretty large role you’d better be asking for a minimum of 100 K!
