Interested in lateraling to ATK, but am skeptical at the feasibility as I'm less than a year into consulting from a non target state school (big ten) anything I can do to get a shot at an interview?

ATK3- Got that you were new when you said "they" instead of "we".

OP - as ATK3 suggested, do your homework first, filter linkedin for common friends / same school and people in your network that can recommend you in general. As you point out, randomly reaching out to someone seldom works.

like

How far are you from completing your first year? It sounds like you are fresh out of undergrad. There was another thread where someone was asking about case interview prep and was interviewing for a BA role which is for undergrad hires. Good luck!

like

ATK 3, is it as as simple as diligently sifting through linked in? Or is there a more robust process? Just seems a bit heavy handed to reach out to random folks since I have no alumni or immediate networks that I can leverage

like

I would complete a year in September, I did see that but I felt bad hijacking that thread! I'm just a little frustrated because I've gotten encouraging performance reviews and I am grateful but my group doesn't do work that I am passionate about and my coaches/partners are not motivated to let me explore. I can't seem to draw much interest from other firms for some reason but I know I could excel if given the chance.

OP you are still in the chicken or egg game called entry level. If you are able to show 2-3 things that you have built into a strength in your year, then networking can get you an interview. Other firms will start noticing when you can show some progression in terms of getting promoted at current firm and then trying to lateral.

Great 👍🏼 thanks for the helpful advice ATK 1 & 2

I think they really look for a cultural fit. I would find an associate/manager type person you like in an industry you are interested in. Really show them that you want to join the firm and they can recommend you. As someone who is a year in too, I would say that a good chunk of my class is happy. So, go for it!

Knowledge seeker checking in..

You're less than a year into your FIRST job and expect to do the work you are passionate about? Earn your stripes, sounds like you are doing well there so keep it up. Plenty of time left to get the good work once you prove yourself

SC, yeah definitely get what you're saying, I guess where I am coming from is that I'm happy here as I learn from others how to be a professional. However, I know that'll end and I could see myself running out of runway so why not start feeling around now?

No. you won't run out of runway at a giant firm like pwc. You could continue learning skills for years, so at least give it a couple years before jumping ship

Why ATK? It's got to be something real (e.g., retail experience ot r culture, which is hard to assess without much interaction). If looking for brand on resume prior to MBA, suggest networking within to get into S&.

Also, there's a fair amount of x-ATK-ers in PwC/S&. Talk to them.

S& that has been made out to be next to impossible. PwC seems to be very keen at keeping S& and MC apart. The only cross work I've seen is when S& folks who are underutilized are placed on MC engagements. If you think it differently I'd love to hear your take!

Again, what are you looking to get from moving to ATK? If you're a strong performer, you can build the case with appropriate partner support.

Well S&, ATK jumps out for several reasons some of which are more convenience. For starters, their presence seems to be outside of the FS space which is what I am in and would like to explore beyond. In addition, their work is not regulatory or tech implementation focused both of which make up a large part of the PwC MC business and as such there seems to exist a certain pressure to specialize in that sort of work atPwC. I have had directors and partners try to sell me on specializing early in these fields when I know in my heart they're not what I like nor where my skill set would be best put to use. ATK also seems to have a large presence in Chicago which is my current market and one in which I'd like to stay. There are many many more reasons why I am looking for a change of pace S& (premature as it may be) however, I would like to be clear that I am extremely thankful for the opportunities that PwC has afforded me and my experiences have forced me to grow in more ways than one!

All good reasons esp if you don't like pigeon holed. Since you are new to consulting, give it a shot. The pay should be better and the experiences different from PwC ones. Only caution is, its a sinking ship unless someone comes to buy it. Never really recovered from the EDS fiasco in the late 90s.

Lol S1. You seem to have news from the 90s too. A) Fastest growing consulting firm with double digit growth from 2010-15 B) post buyout structure would prevent a buyout by anyone else. Try not to fit the S& story to every consulting firm out there

ATK2... Check with your partners. Stop drinking the coolaid.

...and honestly I have a lot of respect for the brand. Not a ship that'll sail for long, unfortunately.
