Ah makes more sense when you put it that way. Still pretty intense to be doing a white boarding session in your first interview. Ugh. Hope you nailed it!
@R/GA 1 But, that’s all we are and we get paid damn good for it 😂. Kidding. It’s a lot more to the job, but strategy is typically not what we do. You have to be solutions oriented, should he able to think from all perspectives of everyone’s job and know what they do and know how to plan and execute all types of projects.
Ironically, I thought I did a good job but they didn't make an offer. The whole process was ridiculous though. Half the people who I was suppose to interview with didn't show up, the recruiter wasn't even there, the people they did send in were confused on why they were interviewing me, and I was told I was gonna have 45 minutes to put together a presentation. The brief was so arbitrary and vague and dependent on a lot of factors not explained but I took a solid shot at it. Except in reality, I had about 15 minutes tops and some markers that barely worked all while I worked on a giant whiteboard in an all glass conference room while everyone stared at me and giggling like I was an animal in the zoo. The whole experience really left a bad taste in my mouth for an agency I always respected greatly.
I get outlining a top line project timeline (to see how you think, work under pressure, etc), but why on earth would a PM be responsible for Strategy??
PMs should be able to think strategically... or you just become a meeting scheduler/budget tracker 😕
And I've know a bunch of past Huge PMs and not a single person had to go through this process. I'm starting to think I was a guinea pig for a really poorly thought out program.
It was more so program-level strategy focused. Like here's the client brief, tell us what we should produce to satisfy the objectives, and how can we do this in the given timing and budget.
Yeah, totally. Shit happens and I'm not losing sleep over it but thought I'd vent here quickly. The first woman they sent in to interview me straight up said 'I have no idea why I'm here and I have no input in the hiring of your role but I guess they needed someone to interview you so here I am' 😭😭😭
Damn that’s intense. How’d it go?
I don't do presentations. I'm serious. If anyone "requires" this assignment or gives me homework, I decline.
Sometimes those roles overlap, but usually at smaller shops. It’s definitely a little outside our wheelhouse, but related I guess. It’s probably to see how you handle an assignment you’re not comfortable with. See how you contribute to the overall vision of the project. That’s my guess anyway
P1 - have you ever conducted or been involved in these types of interview case studies? I have and what they are really after is a bit of thought into the types of deliverables you *may* create as part of the project & timeline accordingly. Otherwise, what will you put in your timeline?!
I would welcome this interview style. Sounds better than a bullshit conversation about why I want to work there and what my strengths are and where I see myself in 5 years.
Maybe they just pretend to interview people to get them to do schedules
OP it's better that it didn't work out. Huge is tanking as a company right now so you dodged a bullet
Sounds like it was a challenging & not very fair experience DP OP. It's always so hard when you put in the effort but the people you are interviewing with don't show the same level of respect & effort
I got super weird vibes when I interviewed at Huge a few years back.
Sounds like utter bullshit, OP.
@OP mine wasn't anything specific, just a general bad feeling. And I've learned to trust my gut.
@Account Director Ya, I've started turning down most places that want me to do a writing assignment.
1) that's what my portfolio is for
2) they never give a proper briefing and writing is never done in a vacuum like that
Exactly, OP. We're not in high school and they don't get to give me an exam. If they can't ascertain my qualifications from live interviews, references and how I carry myself and speak, they're idiots I don't want to work for. And I haven't been asked where I see myself in 3-5 years in a long time because I'm usually the one asking first what are the long-term career prospects of this position? What are your plans for supporting my growth?
