Made me mad just reading it. I’ve heard stories like this too from Deliveroo - they make you do cases for specific cities and then use your free work. In the end, be glad you didn’t end up in a company that treats you like that.
As for the salary they should have at least given a range. The recruiter who hired me for my current job wouldn’t give me a number saying it depends on how well I interview (lol?) so I pressed him a few times by giving my current salary and seeing if its in the same range. This seemed to help for a general indication of what they are willing to pay.
I gave them what I was looking for, told them my salary is around a figure that was what I wanted out of the job. Even though it wasnt miles from the truth. Its a tradeoff between setting expectations and not wasting time vs. having them call out the first offer.
Either way they can always lowball you anyway.
Sounds consistent! Pre-Goog, height of a covid, and after they laid off like 35% of their workforce, I had a HM reach out “to build a relationship” and “have someone to bounce ideas off of” where he assigned me work and deadlines. Literally. Free consulting labor. It was nuts and while I provided a summary of how I would approach something, I stopped responding when he asked if I could put that into a slide. Absurd.
This is crazy!
Then they reveal the comp, which is a joke. I get going from consulting to industry you get a paycut, but it's that the paycut is so big and the comp so not competitive, that I'd be set back 7 years. The HR guy said he's calling to tell me the comp but then spent 1 hour till he got to the point. I told him it was lower than I expected but I liked the work, so what's the next step (because I wanted to get the offer letter). So finally I talk to the guy who'll be my boss. He shows me his org chart, pretty much all open. Tells me I can have my pick, but very rudely says I can't the role I interviewed for, Global Strategy Manager (which is what I interviewed for). I told him that was unexpected, so he said I can have my pick of anything else because they did a blanket search for all the available roles. So I told him about the role I wanted, and asked if he can please specify it on my offer letter. He hesitated and said 'I'll try but you can trust my word.' HR tells me it's great news, please hang tight. The next day, I get a rejection letter. What a fucking waste of time and energy.
What was the comp?
Sounds like they stalled you until their first choice said Yes.
Probably

I’m glad Uber is getting the terrible press it deserves
Say no to free work.

Gotcha. I was thinking there could be a workaround where you still continue to interview with them.

Send them a bill for your time.
ugh hate to see this OP, feel for you, I personally am so skeptically of companies who don't disclose ranges of TC prior to interviews especially if they are like 3-5 rounds of a time commitment

Uber was always a mess.
Not gonna lie that ending had me on an emotional roller coaster and I busted out laughing 😂😂…sorry I know not helpful
All these tech companies always have a case study or technical test to solve to get in. It’s so annoying and exhausting with multiple rounds of it. On top of balancing our current job we’re trying to leave as well. I wish they would just do it in one day, rather multiple rounds to save the stress.
S&O - hired w/i last 6 months. No case for me here or at AMZ. But had one at FB.
Damn
Do you not do any research into their culture?
Salesforce is another one of these - exhaustive long drawn case interviews that feel more like months long projects
I have a Strategic Operations Manager interview for Uber Eats, I finished the screening as well as the assessment, what should I expect in the next round?
