Honestly, I got lucky. In my final interview one of the interviewers said that she knows it’s kind of awkward or taboo to ask about WLB in interviews, but that it’s obviously an important consideration. She then said “I don’t work after 5pm. If you wanted to work after 5pm, good luck getting your emails answered by anyone in this company.”
I took the job and, indeed, I’ve never worked after 5pm. I love this gig
This is great, you are lucky!
I would just ask. You can frame it around wanting to learn how the team triages matters and usual turnaround time if you don’t feel comfortable tackling WLB directly. Remember to assess their answer in light of their own experience. If they say “pretty busy” and they used to work in biglaw, I’d be more cautious than “pretty busy” when they’ve only ever worked in house. It also depends on the role. For example, if you’re coming in to do commercial work, ask how they handle customer requests to negotiate deals (eg if there is a purchase threshold, if they ever agree to work off customer paper, etc). And just try to get of a sense of how happy people are. Usually they won’t be overly positive if the WLB is bad.
This is very good advice. I had an interview earlier this year, and the interviewer keep saying to be prepared for some long days at monthly end, quarter end, etc. to me, it’s a red flag.. I withdraw from the process for other reasons, but I agree the observation of interviews could be a good way to assess WLB
You need to know what good WLB specifically looks like for you and then figure out your questions. What is good for me, you, and somebody else can all look vastly different.
Right, just knowing when you leave the office, you won’t have to think about work again until you come back in, is what I’d consider normal.
The size of the legal team is a good, objective indicator.
That’s a great perspective
