I mean give it a try. When are you going to get your MBA? How many YOE do you have rn? I’ve been approached for these knowledge roles and bc I’m so close to manager I always turn them down bc client-facing work is king.
Trying to get my MBA w/in 3-5 years, and I’m 2 years out of undergrad. Client exposure has been great thus far, and that’s my biggest hesitation with this opp.
From what I know a lot of the knowledge analysts do get some client interaction and actually do pretty much the same work as consultants in some cases - but they definitely don’t have the same “prestige” within the firm as normal consultants and are seen as more of support staff - and in the same category as Business Support Team / Executive Assistants etc. I would encourage you to think about long term goals - you’ll build excellent research skills but won’t really have the opportunity to do really nitty gritty strategy I think in case that’s what you want to do
I’m ex-BCG. It will help get you into school. It will not help you one BCG consulting post-grad. BCG does not like hiring CST from the “other” side of the biz. If you’re open to recruiting for McK/Bain, then go for it.
KT is very rarely client facing and probably doesn’t provide the same opportunities for growth (promo+$)
Not likely
But you could definitely do BCG post-MBA but I think post-MBA you might not even want to do BCG. There are so many other better opps out there
P.s I’m not from the core consultant track either so 🤷🏽♀️
What’s interesting to consider is that BCG is a well recognized name; and that helps with post MBA recruiting, especially in non consulting or Industry roles.
But this person already has client facing experience - so they are probably “polished” :)
Also, IMO, that’s an unkind generalization but I don’t think you meant it in an unkind way.
If you're trying to get a pathway to MBB, I'm not sure this is it.
There's clear lines of separation between who is in KT (Knowledge Team) and the main strategy consulting, and people in KT rarely (and I mean ever) find a way to shift to the other side.
You'll essentially be a second class member of the team--valued, sure, but not as indispensable as a "client side" consultant.
You won't be wholly owning and running workstreams, you'll be supporting that, at arms length.
MBB tend to be very, very "elitist" about who they choose to consider for interviews and why. The only value I can see is that you go to BCG, have the fortune of working with great case teams that appreciate you, and you can use that network to help get you a referral (and knowledge of BCG etc) when you apply POST-MBA. But a lot has to go right for that to happen.
There's also the opportunity cost of not being "client-facing" when you're a knowledge analyst vs staying on at Deloitte.
Yeah that's a good point. It's comes down very much to your B-school and whatever each firm is looking for that particular year. It just clears the bar that you know about how BCG works. But most of the MBA candidates learn that from talking with interns and 2nd year students with offers, or through coffee chats etc. So that doesn't go so far.
