Is 100K mark still a big deal (and goal) for a lot of folks? I’m on H1B with total 11 yoe (4 yoe in US) and yet to touch the 6 figure compensation. Note: I recently moved to Consulting from dead-end QA (software testing) job. Location: Mid West (Iowa)

Not a right place to ask a question like that in an echo chamber. People here brag about their salaries while sharing a studio with a roommate in NYC .

As an H1B myself , congrats! Goal is what you set for yourself. There is always a potential to go up of course, but enjoy the milestone

likesmarthelpfulfunny

I think it’s still a big deal, especially in the Midwest. My wife and I live in Michigan. She is a financial analyst in her mid 30s and still chasing 100. I’m technically based out of New York and complain to my coworkers all the time that I “only make 220.” In NYC, the 2 of us to lived on my salary with little to spare. In Michigan, we live on hers ($90k) and save 100% of mine.

I know there are cost of living calculators that suggest otherwise, but I really think $100k in the Midwest is better than $200k in NYC.

With inflation the way it is 100k is the new 50k

likefunny

🙄

In NYC, Boston, or any major city, the bar has moved to anywhere between 150k and 250k, while I personally believe, for non major city's, the 100k standard applies

like

$2,700 per paycheck before rent

Take home: $5,400 a month
3k for rent
Total left over: $2,400 per month

$275k is the new $100k

likefunny

Irrespective of location?

100K is still a big deal for many people. Yes inflation is bad but if you make 100K you are still better off then most people in the country

like

It's still a big milestone.

like

It’s huge for lost people - I just got it last year at 31 years old, and was the first out of my family to reach that milestone. Parents combined salary is under 6 figures, siblings and their SOs are well under as well. So it has felt like an amazing success to have gotten this far

likeuplifting

Is it the same as $100k was 10years age - No!
Is there room to go higher - Yes!
Is it enough for a family in Iowa - it depends.

Do you think its hard for you/family to make ends meet? Do you think you are living a comfortable life at that income ? These are some questions for you to answer. Especially in this group where most people make more and do not have a sense of how lifestyles can be very different depending on the location, family etc.

like

Hey bud, here’s some perspective- Your starting sal was what? 3.15L? 100k in Iowa is easily equivalent of 25Lpa in India. 3.15 to 25 in 11 years isn’t bad at all.

Here’s another, 100k in Des Moine is equivalent of 225k in San Jose (nerdwallet CoL calc).

Don’t run someone else’s race. You’re doing ok. Plus most people I know are one job switch away from a huge paycheck. Just focus on upping your skill set, get some cloud certs maybe, and you’d be golden.

One last thing, don’t let the WITCH association bring you down. The most open secret is every top tech implementation firm (Big4s, BCG, McK etc) are full of ex-WITCH. You gotta start somewhere.

like

SM2, this is some real piece of advise. Thanks! :)

Were you with a WITCH company? With that YOE you need to get past $100k.

funny

Both D and EY compete with WITCH on tech projects. So while I don’t approve their work culture, I wouldn’t count them out

D and cognizant , both are same tier alliance partners to AWS, Microsoft etc

like

Depends on where you work and what you do

A&M doesn’t have COL adjustments so I’m working in MCOL and getting paid HCOL salaries

Making 6 figures at 23

like

In Iowa 100k would go pretty far. I’m San Francisco you’d likely struggle.

If you have 4 kids in nyc it will probably be pretty hard at 100k.

In rural Texas, much better.

It’s all relative.

like

Absolutely. The median HHI is $70k—at $100k, that’s almost 1.5x. Granted, in places like the Bay Area, low 6 figures is considered poverty.

In HCOL areas, no. In tech and consulting, no.

I'm 23 breaking 100k and after investments/saving feels like shit

The phrase came from way back like the 90s. So it of course has changed significantly since then. But overall, in MCOL areas $100k is significant.

Comparison is the thief of joy

$1M is the new $100K

You can do whatever you want with 100k in Chicago. I save nearly half and still can live comfortably.

TC $114k- Base AMZ- $73k +$38kstocks ( vesting 17k$ due next year)

TC $135k Base PWC -$81$ + Bonuses ( 50k$)

Looking for managerial skills which the PWC role avails, and L6 promo doesn’t seem to be happening soon in current role. I’m also mentally stretched. I hear WLB in PWC is just as busy but can anyone confirm if this move makes any sense. Google Amazon

Should i resign ASAP and not negotiate with Infor . I have all these doubts because Infor is a product based company.

Does a non-tech PMO candidate can also achieve 30-50 LPA in just 5-6 years of experience as you technical people are achieving.

Please also suggest, should I continue in this PMO and go for PMP, Prince2 then try or just learn some technical things and then can only expect this much package?
