I’m in this situation (paid as a consultant) but it is because a rainmaker made it happen.
I think there is maybe a difference between work from anywhere and work remotely from a particular place where there isn't an office? I'm a w2 employee in a state where the firm has no other presence, so I know the firm has to file taxes here now. This is where I need to live for family reasons, and my being here was part of the package when I was hired. I imagine if I was just hopping around from state to state, that would be a very different story.
I have worked remotely for three firms. The first (V100) has an office in my state that is not close enough to commute to, the second (V100) and current (V20) do not have an office in my home state. I am a W2 employee.
I think accommodations are more likely if it makes more sense to keep you than to replace you (e.g., specialized practice), if you have to move for a particular reason (e.g., spouse's job/residency/etc.)., and if a significant portion of your work is "remote" already (i.e., with other offices within your firm). I think it's harder to get a fully-remote job unless you are a specialist.

I think there would be malpractice risks that would prevent this. Even if you’re not in court, you can’t “practice” in a state you’re not licensed in, and I would expect there to be insurance carve-outs if you do it anyway. My firm has let people move out of state to somewhere we don’t have an office, but still made those people get licensed wherever they moved. So I think “work from anywhere” would be impractical.
Confirmed true for my firm. I am licensed in my state. There is another attorney who recently had to move here who is taking the bar here this month.
