Agree with EY1. If you need to get to the blue line regularly, Portage Park is a little too far west. Avondale, Old Irving Park or Kilbourn Park are all good options for single family homes. Kilbourn Park is a very small neighborhood nestled between Avondale, Old Irving Park and Portage Park so it’s often classified in real estate listings as Old Irving Park or Northwest Avondale. We’re in our early 40’s but have no kids. We hop on the Milwaukee Ave. bus to go out in Avondale or Logan Square, we’re a quick bus ride or 8 block walk to the blue line to go to O’Hare, and we’re 2 blocks from a Metra stop to go downtown to work. We’re near the intersection of Addison & Milwaukee and like the location a lot.
Avondale is great. It is on the blue line and up and coming. Lots of new restaurants and bars opening up. Not sure where you’re coming from, but it is similar to Greenpoint in Brooklyn. Portage park is nice but generally more for families
Avondale or Old Irving Park (which is right between Avondale and portage). OIP is very family friendly but it's still very close to logan square and Avondale. Walking distance to Milwaukee Ave is an added bonus. Portage park feels too far west to me. Still good for families but not as "attached" to night life, busier neighborhoods.
Portage Park is not as close to the Blue line. It's farther west. I also need to be walking distance to the Blue line and I'm about 4 blocks from the Irving Park stop. We moved here from Logan square (also on the blue line) when we wanted more space for less money. So I would recommend places in walking distance from the Belmont, Addison, Irving Park or maybe montrose (I guess maybe that's the northern part of portage). All good neighborhoods to live in
There’s a couple townhomes for sale where I live in Logan square (near Avondale). Send a DM if you’re interested.
