Is it normal for a managing attorney to be perturbed by questions from a new associate when they are supposed to be the go-to for approval of expenses and questions regarding internal procedures? Twice in 2 weeks I have gotten “Is this not something you can resolve??” in response to my asking a background question about something in an effort (ironically) to gather information in order to resolve it. I just hit my one month mark and don’t want to be on anybody’s bad side. I don’t know if this is

If you’re working at a high volume PI firm, then unfortunately many of them are set up like this; it’s very “learn to swim by drowning”, which just doesn’t work for everyone.

My advice to you is if the managing partner continues to be like this, find a paralegal or other associate who does know the internal procedures that you need and learn from them as quickly as possible.

That’s definitely the way to go (asking others). I’ve been doing that a bit anyway will just have to save communication with the managing attorney for when it is absolutely unavoidable.

Super nerve racking! I’ve been there. I don’t think you should avoid her. Regarding the follow up on the approval, follow up with her and you can even ask her (in person or over the phone) does she have a preference of time of when you should bump things up to her if you don’t receive a response. I think some partners/managers forget that they were once a new attorney.

🙏🏼 that’s a good idea — I think I’ll do that. Thank you!

(continued) normal for her or if she just doesn’t like me. On one of my cases, I have an expense that I am waiting for her to authorize so that I can do what I need do. It’s been like a week and a half since I sent her the request and I’m anxious about following up. How do I get control of this situation and avoid slipping into a toxic dynamic with her?

In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)
