There’s nothing you can’t do remotely that someone can in person; however, the building of trust and camaraderie requires intention and effort when working remotely. Just my opinion, though.
Apologies, my note was intended to be from an execution perspective.
I’ve worked in firms that had two methods for managing clients: the first had a sales team that handled leads and contracts. We flew out to build relationships, execute some details on-site, and finish remotely. The more traditional post-Covid model where SMs and directors sought additional work. Below that though, the teams made occasional site visits, but 95% was done remotely. My observation is that most of it was organic cross-sales between different service lines to ours.
From a business development standpoint, how can you bring in business without in person networking?
I also think it is crucial to have some sort of in person interaction to build trust with clients
It is an admirable sentiment. Speaking as a client we can certainly meet in person, but I still won’t trust you.
All directors/SM/manager on my team barely go into the office maybe once a week max. One of them just admitted to partnership. As long as you bring in new clients and meet revenue goals you’re set. As for teamwork, we strive to get to know each of our team members at a personal level whether during our in office day or via teams video
You can succeed however you want
If you work for a bigger firm, the push for off shoring is continuing to increase. Having a full US team or even 50% in the near future seems very unlikely. Given that, being remote shouldn’t be a problem.
Depends on what you do. I’m reliant on compliance team partners wanting to involve me/my group, so I come in once/week to make myself seen, regularly present at regional meetings, etc. These steps have increased the percentage of my work that comes from my efforts/eminence as opposed to work found by my boss.
I could have gotten a significant chunk of this benefit doing none of this in person, but I probably accelerated my path to partner/md compared to doing all of this virtually.
In very specialized teams (UHNW and FO) i believe this is easily done remote. Its moreso on the firm to support you expensee for travel and conferences for networking.
No … connections need to be made in person; remote work is for convenience but not meant to be a 5 day thing … how much do you people hate your coworkers and know about internal developments
It depends on what you define as success.
