You mentioned time management as being an issue, but are you sure you're capturing all your time? Any time you touch a file, you should bill for it. I'm only saying that because I felt the same way until I found little tips to help boost my bills.
If it is time management, have you considered blocking your time or lumping admin tasks together to help break up the day? For example, I will check my email first thing in the morning and turn it off per se for 45-90 minutes so I can do some deep work. Then I'll check my email and take a light break before getting back to the other task. Having a rotation may sound monotonous, but it helps getting you in a groove.
If you get easily distracted and find yourself checking things you shouldn't (i.e. social media, internet shopping) when you really need to focus, check out the app Forest. That app is super simple and really helpful!
Also, if you need music to focus, try to make sure it's not something with lyrics.
Yes if you don’t take breaks or go out
this is exactly what I did for my entire associate career. Arrived early, stayed late, mostly respected weekends. Tough briefs, urgent projects, and trial could disrupt that but good majority of weekends and holidays protected. I just made Partner. Totally possible and I encourage it!
I actually work every day in the office. It helps me separate work from home. I start at 820 am and usually at the office until at least 6:30 or 7. Sometimes later. I work through lunch unless we have lunch planned. I make time for coffee but otherwise just try to stay productive. Keep a schedule and honor it! Like I said, occasional late nights and occasional weekends- but definitely not the norm. AMLaw 50.
Yes for the most part, as long as the people you work with respect your weekends. There will probably be occasional weekends when things pop up, but for the most part I don’t work weekends. The biggest thing is to stay focused during the day, don’t waste time on your phone or spend too much time with long conversations with coworkers. Prioritize your tasks so that you know what needs to be done each day/week. I typically work through lunch as well in order to get it all done. I’d rather have the time with family on nights and weekends than spend the time at lunch.
My partner absolutely respects my weekends and even hours after 5pm. I'm just the problem. My office is also social so I need to make the most of my wfh days. It's hard for me to not socialize as I genuinely like my coworkers but I guess I will have to remind myself of the big picture
I have always done this. But, you will have days where you just cannot focus. That is okay. I don’t try too hard those days and will go home early or take a break in the afternoon to go to Starbucks or something. A solid routine and L theanine supplements have also helped me.
In ID? Probably.
Yeah I'm in ID. I just suck at time management
I do this and it mostly works well. I do insurance coverage litigation. Not sure this would be realistic in corporate work
Same. Also in coverage. But I work for 1-2 hours at night.
Probably not, just make sure you attend the free mental health seminar (not billable) and the free zoom yoga class (not billable) and you’ll be fine.
Yes. Show up to work. Put your phone in your desk. Don’t open FaceBowl, FishBook, etc. check email *occasionally* but don’t let it distract you. Stay in office until work is done.
This doesn’t help emergency assignments. But you can get 95%+ done if you maintain focus and separate work from personal.
Amazing advice and how I did!!!
Having kids forces you to be ultra efficient with your time if you want to have any left to spend with them
Yes. Absolutely possible. The art of billing is critical. You should have some social lunches with partners and ask them about their billing methods. I have no doubt you will be able to meet your hours once you have this “art” down.
Just got out of ID. I billed 8.5-9 hrs a day every day. I ate at my desk and didn’t really socialize with anyone. Also, make sure you bill every single minute of your time. Don’t bill just for the most productive minutes—bill for the warm up, the summary, and the planning too. You’d be surprised how much time you spend on a case.
